At the same time I think it wouldn't be at all unfair to say it's reached this point in large part due to the success of Miku's character design. In fact I highly doubt we'd even all be here talking about Vocaloid if there wasn't a character mascot to go with it, or one that wasn't as attractive to people. |

People like that would expect the software to be imperceptible from a human singer, and I doubt we'll ever get that far (especially to a highly trained ear.) You would have to find a music critic who could admit that even though it's not a perfect substitute for a real singer it's really good taken on its own. Good News though, English vocaloids have been out for a while. Zero-G labs have 3 first-gen and 3 second-gen ones, and while they don't give the full-on miku treatment fans have picked up the slack a little bit. |

Funny thing is if 'Running Wild' has actually read the article I doubt they would have posted that at all. Welcome to the internet, where very few people actually read anything! Seriously though what do they even assume Miku 'stands for' that they hate so much, I don't even know. She stands for 'grass roots community-driven creativity' to me and I don't know how that's ever a bad thing. |

First off, the Vocaloid software is actually not that expensive compared to other musical software. It's 15000 yen for one of the Crypton ones, which is about $190. Second, most of the producers that use her are already musicians with instruments and various other equipment which probably all cost much more than a single Vocaloid program, which leads me to believe most of the users are probably legit. Not that I have any facts to back that up though. |

I keep telling my friends this and they still wont believe me:
human singers will still have a place in the world... don't get me wrong. But for someone like me, who's fed up with useless news like the Kardashians, the Hip-Hop scandals and all their shootings and gang wars and useless shit like that, the secret pictures taken that show up on the Enquirer every month... Sure, real life human singers, movie stars, and shit-ass reality TV showsetc. following "Teen Hoe's" can fill that role. All I care about is the music, and to me at least one entertainment industry is taking steps down a new, fresh, exciting, and above all, different line with what people like to call "Singing cpu programs" or "synthesised singers". Yeah, call it whatever the mass media likes to call it, but for me, at least the likes of Miku and co. can fill the need for REAL music for me, since to me, this is the future that'll take a nice big chunk of the music industry and finally go back to what it was originally; about the music, and not all the secondary tabloid crap. |

Minor corrections:
The engine is not open-source, it's shareware. (Though, anyone can make a voicebank for it, so I can see why it might be a little confusing...?) Also, it's not called Utauloid, it's called UTAU. The voicebanks (and accompanying characters) using UTAU are called Utauloids (or UTAUs). (Great article though, I'll admit. Always happy to see Vocaloid and UTAU getting coverage.) |

Well, actual musicians are a different group altogether (though admittedly many "garage bands" are starving upstarts like the rest of us, so it may still not be above them to scrimp on costs where they can.) Rather, many of the videos seem to be done by fans who aren't musicians but treat it like AMVs (should've said that instead of fansubs; more apropos), like a hobby. They're not looking to make money out of this thing, so they're not looking for this thing to put a hole in their pocket neither.
Dude, many legendary musicians are rebels - and thus not averse to getting into troubles. But that's what made them great. Don't look for angels - that's what moe anime is for. Or agency-manufactured j-pop idols (they're not even allowed to date; no controversy).

That's the thing though, alot of them aren't just doing it as a random hobby. They're doing it because they are musicians. Even if they are unsigned, amateur musicians, they are still musicians. Have you ever seen Ryo's workroom even before his debut album? That guy is a serious musician, as are several other producers that use vocaloids. A good amount of them think of it was an alternative vocalist, which is what it really is. That mindset of treating Vocaloid PVs like AMVs is actually wrong, and mostly just on the western side of Vocaloid fandom. No plain ole "fan" doing it as a hobby is going to make music as interesting or expressive as some of the stuff that comes out. Sure some of it is probably just "fans" messing around, but I highly doubt those are the ones that get popular. I probably shouldn't have said "most" when I was talking about how many of the producers actually have expensive equipment of some kind since I can't substantiate it. However, even if they aren't buying super expensive equipment and are just using freeware for their production, $190 for a program for a working individual is completely doable, especially for one already inclined toward music, as it is simply another useful tool. Mostly though I just think people should stray away from the idea of these producers, PV directors, etc., as just being "fans" and not as people trying to express something.
