i'm still confused about a few things.
so if this takes place in a dimension far more advanced than ours, how come they haven't grasped the concept of flight? also what happened to Envy? he went through the gate also. and how come Edward still has the automail even though he was returned to normal?

Well, with the first part - it's just a matter of what science is focused on vs. another. Whatever science is worked on the most will have the greatest amount of development. IIRC, even Ed's Dad made a comment about the focus of the science in Europe.
As far as the rest is concerned? You got me, I really don't know about the rest. I was confused about the automail as well.

I think he had to pay an arm and a leg for Al's life again. The law of conservation may not be at a 1:1 ratio, but it still seems to exist somehow. It's too bad that he never had a chance to have Winry fix his automail though. He was just left with a limp hand.

They weren't more advance, it's just instead of being known as Paracelius, and the father of modern Chemistry, Pop Honneheim became the father of alchemy. In that world he made it work by using the souls of this world to make up for the conservation of energy. Many of the technical developments are on the same pace, but many wild eye dreamers that would create flight in our world worked alchemy in FMA, so that the far applications of technology that require great personal vision in our world didn't happen there.
Now what's far more problematic for me is the Thule Society. Pop might just be creating the Nazi Party, while Ed will go have a future close to Von Braun.

It never said it was more advanced. It's just an alternate 1920s german-ish setting. The one side of the gate is their world, the "Other Side" is our real world. Our world and our people are the very source of their alchemy. As for Envy, no one who passes through gate ever ends up at the same place, so he most likely ended up somewhere else. Al gave his existance to bring Ed back, with his limbs restored. Ed in turn gave his existance to have all restored. He did intend for his limbs to return, but it just didn't work out that way.
Heh, it took me a couple viewings of the last few episodes to finally figure all that out.
