So I'm hearing that at Sakuracon, Bandai revealed in Q&A that Turn A Gundam will be a sub-only release on DVD. I don't really doubt who it's coming from (he was there), but can anyone affirm this?

Yes, the decision has been made to make Turn A Gundam a sub-only release.

.....Which pretty much kills all my enthusiasm for it, unless it comes out in a cheap Anime Legends set somewhere down the road. Sad

Soooo if there's no plans to dub it then why haven't we heard anything about it?? Sentai pumps out sub only sets in mere months after announcing them. Why the hell is Bandai so slow????

Good point, especially since the show is older and we wouldn't be waiting for the Japanese to release it over there first either.

Why isn't Bandai dead yet...? >:/

No, really. It's pissing me off that they're hoarding licenses, taking a decade to decide with them, then delay it a few more times, only to release a compromised product. What.

If this is true then Bandai can go **** themselves. I waited years for Turn A Gundam to get licensed and they go and make it subbed only. I am through with this half-baked company.

Well I didn't think it would get a dub. If I remember correctly I don't think Turn A did very well in Japan. Regardless I am going to be getting this once it comes out.

I would have been shocked if Turn A had gotten a dub honestly. Gundam, outside of Wing and maybe 00, hasn't been a particularly smash hit over here, so the people who would have bought Turn A with a dub probably wouldn't have justified the cost of it.

However, if Bandai drags the release out for years, I will be VERY upset, to say the least.

Wow, I didn't even know Turn-A was getting a Region 1 release in the first place. That being said, sub-only doesn't bother me, especially considering how the last good Gundam dub that I can remember was produced about a decade ago (SEED & Zeta, two of the more recent examples, were both abysmal dubs, though admittedly I've not heard 00's yet). However, what will piss me off is if Bandai decides to put the series out in single five-episode volumes for its initial run before switching over to proper 13+ episode "season" releases or an "Anime Legends" collection. There's really no place for that sort of release schedule anymore, yet for some reason Bandai still seems to be one of the only ones doing it. All it means to me is another year or more waiting to buy the damn series, because I for one am not touching single volumes of anything with a ten-foot pole.

Let's just break this down:
Turn A Gundam is...

-A Gundam show. A franchise that has never quite clicked in the US. Not only that, it's one of the most unusual Gundam shows and one of the ones that wasn't even very popular in Japan.

-Not 13, not 26, but 50 episodes long. That's a hell of a lot of episodes to commit to dubbing.

-12 bloody years old. I don't think I've ever heard of a 12 year old show being licensed for the first time. Hell, you rarely see a 2 year old show licensed with the exception of restorations/re-releases/rescued classics. And for good reason. It's an insanely tough sell. The vast majority of people will not buy a show that looks dated.

So seriously, what did you guys expect? It's a miracle that Bandai picked this up at all. I can understand complaining when something comes out sub only and it seems at least plausible that it could have supported a dub if the company was just willing to make the investment. However, anyone who was expecting this to be dubbed or thinking this possibly could be dubbed without committing financial suicide needs a serious reality check.

Plus, who cares if it's taking a while. It's been 12 bloody years. I think it's safe to say that you've all either seen the show fansubbed or you're okay with waiting a looooooong time. So what's another year?

ikillchicken, I applaud you. That was a wonderful breakdown of many very good an legitimate reasons against Turn A being able to support a dub.

Can I make an argument real quick...? It's not a terribly complex or controversial one...

You see, the more sub only releases you make....the more voice actors you end up putting out of a job. More and more, video game publishers are outsourcing their recording studios to Hollywood these days. And with the dwindling anime market as is, they really shouldn't be messing around like this...

It's like the age old argument of cheap car vs. hybrid. Yeah, you'll save money right away on a gas guzzler, but a more expensive hybrid will save you in the long run.

I would have been shocked as well, Gundam has only a mild following here and Turn A is virtually unknown outside of the hardcore Gundam fanbase. This release is pretty much aimed at people who are already fans of Turn A with little to no exceptions. It's already well known Bandai has already taken a bath on other long running Gundam shows, notably Zeta Gundam (take one guess why ZZ Gundam has yet to come out here), and it would be a fools errand thinking Turn A would fare much better.

What's your point? It's unfortunate if people find themselves out of a job but if the service that you as a VA provide just isn't a good deal for your customers (the anime industry) anymore then that's what has to happen. It's absurd to suggest that the anime industry make bad decisions and lose money on dubs just so VAs don't find themselves out of a job.
