The law is especially silly because its purpose is to "protect children from insult", not, you know, to protect actual children from actual exploitation. It's retarded.

Who'd have though I'd see the day when someone was punished by law, for having virtual child porn. This is beyond stupid, but if this keeps up, I might be able to get an awesome job with the though police.

It's not like the people who cause these convictions care about exploitation of children. They care about the fact that adults might get offended.

In any case, Lundström seems to be a well-known figure in Swedish manga circles. According to Wikipedia he's worked on quite a few titles for several publishers, not just two.

And now he'll probably never be able to get a job in manga ever again. Stupid law just ruined his life.

Slowly all over the world civil rights are abolished under that pretense that is "for the common good". The sad part is that most people do not care or are brainwashed and they say "eww, he deserved it".

If this is accurate, it should appear that the lawmakers of the country in question, much like their counterparts in an unfortunately-high number of other nations, feebly attempt to justify these laws via the dubious premise that they inhibit ill-consequence. One would be appreciative of a political establishment with the honesty to admit that laws of this sort are motivated by ostensibly deontological principles, which should thus face criticism as such.

It can be hoped that the people of Sweden, for whom I hold much respect, reflect upon whether the putative explanation for this legal ruling accords with their mature moral sentiments.

Question:

Was he charged under standard child pornography laws? Like, as if he was in possession of actual child pornography?

Because if he was, the fact that he only received a fine says far more about Sweden than the fact that it was for virtual images.

Indeed. The amount of ignorance is overwhelming. Sweden is my neighboring country and I can see something like this happening here as well. I can say that Nordic people are almost incabaple of thinking for themselves. (Even in a supposedly tolerant country like Sweden, where death threats are given when people vote "wrong" in a democratic election, supported by the media and even the church, year 2010. Sorry swedes, but that is how it came out in Finnish media.)

From the article: "None of the images depicted real children."

Perhaps it was only a fine because no *real* children were harmed.
My question would be,
- would the mangaka who drew the images get busted and fined also? More severely since its from his "sick" mind and skills that made the offending images.

It seems, from the vague descriptions, that there must be some sort of lesser level for drawn pornography than actual pornography in Sweden, given that they only fined him.

But, keep in mind that "child pornography" laws run the entire range throughout the world. Photos that in the US would count as child pornography run every day in UK mainstream newspapers ("Page 3" girls, who can be as young as 16 in the UK, or probably younger in other countries). The US has some of the strictest in the world.

He'll probably pay the fine and have it over with. Although it was wrong in this case to charge him since he only had the images because his job required him to have it and not because he's turned on by them. But the legal system doesn't like to be shown up when they've made a mistake. I guess they feel that if they scare off the translators they'll stop the import of manga.

Yes. Freedom of expression is only granted if the images are created privately, not distributed or can be categorized as "art". However there are almost no precedents, I think he is the second person ever to be convicted for drawn child pornography under Swedish law.

That is incorrect. He translated manga such as One Piece, that didn't "require" him to have hentai material. Naturally he should be allowed to have it though.

I have no way of knowing, but for the sake of the argument lets suppose that he is turned on by drawings of fictional characters (of the kind that no real person was involved as models). Why should their creation or possesion should be deemed illegal by the state? Furthermore, it has been proven that on places where pornography is banned due to so called "morality" the number of sexual crimes rises since these individuals have no way to vent their sexual frustrations.
