3x3 Eyes (OAV) So-so The 3x3 Eyes OVA series and its sequel, the 3x3 Eyes Seima Densetsu OVA series, are fairly old anime but still quite interesting. Although they try to have dramatic tension, that is hard to achieve when the main character is immortal... and amnesia and multiple personalities are overused tropes. They are pretty good if you ignore such flaws. But for me it is hard to be worried about a character getting killed if that character is immortal.

Angel Links (TV) Awful This show is a spinoff of some characters that appeared in one episode of Outlaw Star, an anime I liked a whole lot. Well, this anime is nowhere near as good as Outlaw Star and was canceled after 13 episodes due to its low quality. I didn't hate it or anything, it was just mostly a waste of time, I could care less about this show.
anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (TV) Masterpiece Very nice show about a ghost and a group of childhood friends that is actually quite light-hearted and fun.
anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (movie) Masterpiece If you liked the show, watch this movie afterwards. It's really great. Don't watch this if you haven't watched the show yet though, that's the wrong order.
Attack on Titan (TV) Very good This show is quite horrifying horror where the heroes usually lose and everything is quite bleak, and has excellent production value. Then again, I prefer shows where the heroes win, because the feeling of horror I get when watching this show is very real and is a different emotion than happiness...
Attack on Titan: Ilse's Notebook (OAV) Very good This OVA is the same good quality as the rest of Attack on Titan, this OVA being about an odd Titan with unusual behavior and the research into Titans, and of course it raises more questions than it answers.
Attack on Titan: No Regrets (OAV) Very good This is the same good quality as the rest of Attack on Titan. It's interesting to find out about the underground areas that are barely even mentioned in the main show, and find out the backstory of the character Levi. Still, I find it hard to understand the people underground wanting to live on the surface, since on the surface they're liable to be eaten by Titans and underground it's safer (Titans need sunlight to survive).
Bleach (TV) Excellent I love Bleach. It is one of the best shounen action animes (I'd only rank Gurren Lagann and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood higher, and it narrowly edges out InuYasha), and it is the best shinigami anime (beating out Death Note and Soul Eater). Everything about it is awesome. That is true for both the TV series and the movies.
Bleach the Movie: Fade to Black (movie 3) Excellent I love Bleach.
Bleach the Movie: Hell Verse (movie 4) Excellent I love Bleach.
Bleach the Movie: Memories of Nobody Excellent I love Bleach.
Bleach: The DiamondDust Rebellion (movie 2) Excellent I love Bleach.
Blood+ (TV) Excellent By far the best installment of the Blood franchise (which also includes Blood: The Last Vampire, Blood-C, and Blood-C: The Last Dark), this is quite an excellent vampire series, better than the original Hellsing, and second only to Hellsing Ultimate (making it the second-best vampire anime). Everyone should watch this show.
Blood-C (TV) Not really good This vampire anime is nowhere near as good as Blood+, which is also part of the Blood franchise, nor does it compare to anything from the Hellsing franchise. The movie Blood-C: The Last Dark is a sequel to this anime and is better than it, but you should watch this first if you want to see that movie, or else it'll totally spoil the plot of this show. It's not a very good show, but still, I don't want to spoil it for anyone.
Blood-C: The Last Dark (movie) So-so This movie is the sequel to the Blood-C TV series, which is not a very good show, but it pays to watch that show since this movie is actually kinda good. Not as good as the show Blood+ or any of the Hellsing franchise, but certainly better than the original Blood movie, Blood: The Last Vampire. Anyway don't watch this movie until you've watched all of Blood-C first (which oughta be doable as Blood-C doesn't have very many episodes). Don't worry, this movie is better than the Blood-C TV series, and is a satisfying conclusion to an unsatisfying show.
Blood: The Last Vampire (movie) Bad After watching and enjoying the excellent anime series Blood+ quite a bit, I went back and watched this older anime movie which it is supposedly loosely based on. Well, let's just say it was a major disappointment. Supposedly some people really liked this movie and it is what led to the shows Blood+ and Blood-C being made. That doesn't really make sense to me, but I am certainly glad Blood+ was made. I don't really understand the appeal of this movie. It's no Blood+, it's no Hellsing or Hellsing Ultimate, and it's not even as good as the Blood-C movie released as a sequel to the Blood-C series. It's arguable as to whether it's better or worse than the Blood-C series... personally I think the Blood-C series is better than this movie, which I consider the worst thing in the Blood franchise. Maybe that is just because it is so dated and has fairly low production quality and I am too finicky and judging things by the standards of more recent, higher-budget anime, but whatever.
BPS - Battle Programmer Shirase (TV) Not really good This show is a spinoff of Magical Girl Pretty Sammy (with its character Misao, but not her Pixy Misa alter ego, as one of the main characters), and Magical Girl Pretty Sammy is itself a spinoff of Tenchi Muyo! It supposedly has 15 episodes, but since the episodes are all in groups of 3 that go together, and each of the 15 episodes is about 8 minutes long, I prefer to think of it as having 5 half-hour episodes and each of the 5 episodes being divided into 3 parts. You might experience some confusion over that. Anyway, now that I've cleared up things and explained how there are only 5 episodes, my primary complaint about this show is it ends after only 5 episodes, and ends just when things are starting to get interesting. The main character, whose name is the same as the name of the show, Battle Programmer Shirase, is a super hacker and a pervert (kinda like the one in Steins;Gate, Daru, except he isn't fat), and he is Misao's uncle, has an inappropriately close relationship with her bordering on pedophilia and incest that is played for laughs in every episode, and the only thing keeping him out of jail for his inappropriate relationship with his niece is that the Japanese government needs him and his super hacking skills. It is somewhat of an absurdist comedy, although each of the episodes is pretty similar and it gets rather formulaic and repetitive until the surprising plot twists in the last of the 5 episodes start to make things interesting, setting things up for a more interesting plot that WOULD exist in future episodes if they had actually been made, except for the fact that this never happened so instead the series ended on a cliffhanger that raised more questions than it answered. All in all, it's OK, not a total waste of time, but certainly not as good as the show it is a spinoff of, Magical Girl Pretty Sammy. I had fun watching it (despite it being too repetitive), but it ended so quickly it was a real letdown.
Chaos;HEAd (TV) Excellent I love this show and have watched it many times. It is full of crazy people, "gigalomaniacs", with supernatural powers, and although it is sort of a sci-fi show, it goes more into the realm of dark fantasy than sci-fi. It is wonderful. It is not quite as good as its sequel Steins;Gate (in fact since Steins;Gate is the best anime ever made there's more than a little difference). Still this show is a real gem, highly recommended. All the stuff about delusions, Di swords, the Gladiale saga, the Noah 2 machine, the Ir2 equation... I love it! Most people don't embrace this show quite as enthusiastically as me though for some reason so if you don't love it as much as me that's perfectly normal.
Chobits (TV) Decent An anime about humanoid robots and how they affect human society, whether it is possible for them to be human, and whether love between humans and robots is possible. It's fairly good but I think it's overrated, given the slow pacing of the series and how it is somewhat boring. There are 3 OVAs that are mostly just episode summaries (the OVAs are episodes 9, 18, and 27, whereas the TV episodes are episodes 1-8, 10-17, and 19-26). So the show is divided into 3 9-episode sections, with 8 episodes of stuff happening and the 9th one being an OVA summary each time, for a total of 27 episodes. Anyway it's a pretty good show but I've seen plenty of anime that is much better, so its relatively low score from me is just a reflection of all the really amazingly good anime I've seen rather than saying this show is bad or anything... it isn't bad, it's just average.
Chobits (OAV) Decent These OVAs are episode summaries for the Chobits TV series. Anime News Network only lists one OVA but actually there are 3. The other 2 are listed under Chobits (TV) as episodes 9 and 18, whereas the one Anime News Network counts as an OVA is also referred to as episode 27. You may notice a pattern, that the OVA episode numbers are all divisible by 9 and divide the Chobits TV series into 3 parts. I'd rate the 3 OVAs (episodes 9, 18, and 27) as exactly the same quality as the rest of the show... good but not great, I've seen plenty of anime that's better. This anime is of average quality for anime.
Clannad (movie) Very good The Clannad movie is the original animated version of Clannad (with the Clannad and Clannad After Story anime series being alternate retellings). The 2 Clannad anime series are superior quality to this movie, with more plot, more characters, much better animation quality, plus they have comedy whereas this movie is pretty serious and mostly drama. Please note that this movie is the original version of the ENTIRE Clannad story (including both the Clannad series AND Clannad After Story series), not just the half from the Clannad series... it includes the After Story half of the story TOO. There are many differences of course. This movie is liable to make you cry even if you are the sort of person like me who almost never cries, so it is pretty emotionally moving. Although this movie came out before the Clannad and Clannad After Story anime series, I suggest watching it AFTER them because it is full of plot spoilers and might ruin things for you (you should ESPECIALLY avoid watching it IN BETWEEN the Clannad and Clannad After Story anime series which is what I did, which made After Story not quite as good for me since its plot had already been spoiled by me seeing this movie first).
Clannad (TV) Excellent The first half of the story of Clannad. Watch this prior to Clannad After Story, and the Clannad movie last of all (with the Clannad movie being the original, less developed version of the entire story). It's quite a good series with comedy and drama and great production quality, although a little too much of a romantic tearjerker for my personal tastes (although most of that happens in After Story), but I do really like the Dango Family ending sequence from this series. This series and After Story are both better quality than the movie.
Clannad After Story (TV) Excellent The second half of the story of Clannad. Watch this after the Clannad anime series but before the Clannad movie (with the Clannad movie being the original, less developed version of the entire story). It's quite a good series with comedy and drama and great production quality, although a little too much of a romantic tearjerker for my personal tastes, with this second half going much more into being a tearjerker than the first half did. This series as well as the original series are both better quality than the movie.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) Masterpiece I love both seasons of Code Geass equally although obviously watch the first season before the second one. Full of action, plot twists, and all the various tropes of modern anime.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (TV) Masterpiece I love both seasons of Code Geass equally although obviously watch the first season before the second one. Full of action, plot twists, and all the various tropes of modern anime.
Code Geass: Nunnally in Wonderland (OAV) Bad This is just stupid, and nowhere near the quality of Code Geass. Apparently it's a self-parody of Code Geass by the creators of Code Geass, but the animation quality of this is pretty much non-existent and it's quite badly written.
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Very good Cowboy Bebop is quite good, something every anime fan should watch, but it's also quite overrated (as far as space westerns like it go, I'd rank it first, Outlaw Star second, and Trigun third). So while it is quite a good show, people overstate how good it is if they rate it as Masterpiece, something it is not. Anyway, watch this show first, and then the movie.
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Good Don't watch this movie unless you've seen Cowboy Bebop first, otherwise it won't make sense. Also, it isn't exactly a sequel to the show, instead it takes place in between 2 of the episodes of Cowboy Bebop near the end of the series. Personally I don't think its quality is quite as good as the Cowboy Bebop series. But if you saw Cowboy Bebop and liked it, go ahead and watch this movie too.
Dead Leaves (OAV)
Death Note (TV) Very good This shinigami show is even better than Soul Eater but not quite as good as Bleach. It is also quite different from them and has often been compared to Code Geass (it is not quite as good as Code Geass). Anyway instead of being a shinigami action show like Bleach or Soul Eater, it's a shinigami detective/mystery show about a serial killer with shinigami powers named "Kira" and a detective trying to put an end to his crime spree named "L", and the main focus of this show is having constant plot twists in pretty much every episode throughout the entire series, something you get used to pretty early on in the series. Of course since the viewer knows who the culprit is and knows the answer to the mystery all along right from the first episode, the real point of the show is the game between "L" and "Kira" to see which of them can unmask the other one's identity and have victory over them first. It's a game of 2 geniuses battling it out in a game of wits in which the rest of humanity are all pawns and the fate of the world is at stake, and both of them trying to impose their version of "justice" on the other. The viewer is meant to sympathize with the detective "L" rather than the serial killer "Kira", but the creators of the show didn't make the morality quite black and white enough or make "Kira" unsympathetic enough for that to actually work, so many viewers of the show sympathize with "Kira" even though the show's creator had the opposite intention (the show actually seems to put both of them in moral gray areas, which is not what the creator wanted). That is one notable failure of this anime in delivering on its creator's vision, but mostly it is an excellent anime, even if it does tempt some viewers into sympathizing with a serial killer/mass murderer despite the intentions of the creator for the show not to do this. One last note: If you want to see another mystery/detective anime involving a serial killer, a very good one is Monster.
(The) Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (movie) Excellent This movie is actually quite good despite following after the lackluster 2nd season of the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and is probably the best thing out of the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise, slightly better than the first season of the show.
Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure (TV) Decent A parody of Neon Genesis Evangelion by the creator of Tenchi Muyo! which mostly deals with parallel universes and has mad scientists and giant robot fights where, absurdly, nobody is ever killed and the war is entirely nonviolent. While it is funny and interesting, it is also a bit formulaic and the animation quality isn't that great. Be sure to watch the OVA special afterwards if you watch this show.
Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventures Special Decent This is basically the final episode of Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure. So if you watch it, watch this right afterwards. The quality is exactly the same as the earlier episodes.
Elfen Lied (TV) Masterpiece Full of tons of violence and nudity, which is mostly needed for plot reasons but maybe a little gratuitous, this show has quite a compelling plot and is quite a good horror/thriller show, very good at making you worry what will happen next, and the end result being pretty much flawlessly executed and pretty much the best of this genre I've seen.
Elfen Lied (OAV) Excellent A humorous little special that fits in between 2 episodes of the Elfen Lied anime, it has a completely different mood than the serious mood of Elfen Lied and really lightens things up a lot. If you liked Elfen Lied I'd recommend checking this OVA out afterwards (it's pretty obvious where in the plot it fits into, I highly doubt you'll get confused). I liked the Elfen Lied anime a bit better than this OVA since I think Elfen Lied is a true horror masterpiece, while this OVA is mostly just for fun.
Eureka Seven (TV) So-so This is quite an overrated show, and I can't stand the wimpy main character Renton Thurston, plus out of every anime I've seen, this one is the most derivative, specifically being very derivative of Neon Genesis Evangelion and not at all as good. It does have excellent production value and animation quality, and there's plenty of plot, characters, and many episodes. But just as Renton Thurston sometimes complains about things being boring, I find Eureka Seven to be boring. Anyway, Gurren Lagann, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Code Geass, Robotics;Notes, Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure, and countless other shows have done giant robot anime far better than Eureka Seven. In fact, although the Eureka Seven movie is pretty bad and is definitely worse than this series and takes the few good things about this series and butchers them, the sequel to Eureka Seven, Eureka Seven: Astral Ocean (or Eureka Seven: AO for short) is actually much better than the original Eureka Seven and is actually pretty good. I suppose the main reason I dislike this show, though, is I am not part of its target audience, namely little boys who are just hitting puberty in their early teens or "tween" years. Eureka Seven is probably pretty good as far as being a children's show goes, it just has limited appeal to adults... that's not saying there aren't any adults who like it... there are plenty, just saying that most adults wouldn't like it. Anyway, forget about this show, watch Gurren Lagann instead, it's infinitely better.
Eureka Seven - good night, sleep tight, young lovers (movie) Not really good I didn't like Eureka Seven as much as most people but I enjoyed it at least a little. This movie is certainly worse than the Eureka Seven TV series, a badly edited mishmash with nonsense about Peter Pan and Neverland (reminds me of Michael Jackson), but it's not THAT bad... it's not that good either though.
EUREKA SEVEN AO (TV) Decent I actually liked Eureka Seven: Astral Ocean (or Eureka Seven: AO) quite a bit more than the original Eureka Seven (which I rather disliked), and its shout-outs to earlier anime show that the creators of the show give credit where credit is due. Still, I have seen plenty of other giant robot anime that is simply amazingly good so I can't rank this as highly as shows like Gurren Lagann, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Code Geass, etc. If you like Eureka Seven: Astral Ocean be sure to check out its OVA. People who are actually fans of Eureka Seven tend to like the original Eureka Seven better than Eureka Seven: Astral Ocean, but I guess I am a little unique because I like this better than the original.
EUREKA SEVEN AO (OAV) Decent This OVA goes in between episodes 8 and 9 of Eureka Seven: Astral Ocean, as episode 8.5. It's mostly just good clean fun. Anyone who wants to watch this should probably watch Eureka Seven: Astral Ocean (Eureka Seven: AO) first for it to make sense.
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (movie) Masterpiece A remake of the parts of Neon Genesis Evangelion up through Operation Yashima (which uses all the electricity in Japan), prior to Asuka joining the story. Few differences from the original series other than the graphics upgrade and various details different.
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (movie) Masterpiece The 2nd part of the new Evangelion movies, this one introduces a new character (the cat-girl with glasses who loves the smell of LCL) and starts to diverge from the original plot of the series, first just a little, but increasingly throughout the movie until by the end the storyline is on an entirely different trajectory from the original Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (movie) Masterpiece The third part of the new Evangelion movies, this one is entirely different from anything in the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series. I still liked it quite a bit despite its rather bleak setting and how different it is, and it makes me wonder what the 4th new Evangelion movie will have in store.
Excel Saga (TV) Masterpiece The funniest, wackiest anime I've ever seen. When you're done with it be sure to check out its sequel Puni Puni Poemy. I can't recommend this highly enough, everyone should watch it! Also be sure you watch the ENTIRE show, including the final episode which never aired on TV due to censors, as the final episode takes everything to a new level of awesomeness and absurdity. If you watch the English dubbed version, you should find it amusing that the same guy who does the voice for the creepy pedophile character also did the English dubbed voice for Shinji in Neon Genesis Evangelion. And you should easily recognize the English dubbed voice of Hyatt in Excel Saga because her voice actor has appeared in pretty much every English dubbed anime ever dubbed into English. Anyway this is the most hilarious show I've ever seen. If you like both it and Puni Puni Poemy a whole lot like I did, I'd also suggest watching Nerima Daikon Brothers too, a musical comedy show that was also made by Great Director Nabeshin (the ONLY musical comedy anime I know of).
FLCL (OAV) Very good A very unusual, experimental 6-episode OVA series that really pushes the boundaries of anime and is highly creative. It is also fairly nonsensical, the plot is deliberately full of contradictions, and while some people think this show is deep and that everything in it has some kind of deeper meaning, I think the people who made it were just trying to have some fun. It's not bad, but it's not as great as some people think it is either. It's just a ridiculous show that delights in being weird and unusual, and while it can certainly hold the viewer's attention and be entertaining that way, I've definitely seen a LOT of anime that is much better. This show is just weird for the sake of being weird and there isn't really any point to it besides that. If you want to see wacky experimental anime that actually turned out to be very good and quite funny I'd suggest watching Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemy, which are way better than this (just as wacky and weird, but a million times funnier). The main failure of the experiment with FLCL is the wackiness and weirdness fails to accomplish much of anything, such as humor for instance. Then again, I'd say FLCL's experiment is a success at packing as much weirdness into 6 episodes as possible... but then again, Puni Puni Poemy packed EVEN MORE weirdness into ONLY 2 episodes, so I can't really say that about FLCL given how Puni Puni Poemy has it beat. FLCL does manage to have a plot and character development, and does pack a lot into its 6 episodes, and is mostly a coming-of-age story about the kid Naota/Takkun, about hitting puberty. Anyway since it's only 6 episodes and is fairly interesting I'd recommend people watch it for themselves and make up their own minds... despite my relatively low rating for this I do think it is a show everyone should watch just so they have experienced it. But it is even more important that people watch Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemy to see how weird anime SHOULD be done.
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Excellent Although it's not quite as good as the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood remake, the 2nd half of the story for this show is entirely new and not from the manga or the series and there are many notable differences, and this original version of the anime has its own kinda retro appeal to me. Since it's not as fast-paced as Brotherhood and is easier to follow, it might be the preferable version for more casual anime fans. This show ITSELF doesn't have a real ending but the movie Conqueror of Shamballa serves as the ending to this show, so immediately after you watch this show watch Conqueror of Shamballa.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (TV) Masterpiece A flawless execution of the story of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga, better than the original Fullmetal Alchemist series, with more characters, a more complicated plot, more things to keep track of, and plenty of action.
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa Very good This movie is the ending to the original (NOT Brotherhood) Fullmetal Alchemist anime. Watch it after watching the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime to see it in its proper context as the ending to that show. Anyway, it's not quite as good as the Fullmetal Alchemist anime, which I really liked a whole lot, since it relies a bit too much on this whole silly plot involving Nazis from our world and is historically inaccurate (the Nazis would never allow a woman to be a leader, for instance, and the actual Thule Society never amounted to anything in the first place and was already entirely irrelevant long before the Beer Hall Putsch).
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos (movie) Very good A movie that takes place during a timeskip of the timeline of the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood series, it has a pretty interesting story and setting.
(The) Garden of Sinners (movie series) Masterpiece These movies are quite good indeed despite being rather confusing, and are just really well done. Just remember to watch them in the following order: 2, 4, 3, 1, 5, 6, Remix, 7, Epilogue, and then the 2 parts of the newer "recalled out summer" movie. It makes more sense if you watch it in that order. Anyway, it's quite odd to find myself rooting for a character whom I believe to be a serial killer, not something any ordinary anime could accomplish.
(The) Garden of Sinners/recalled out summer (movie) Masterpiece If you liked the Garden of Sinners movies, watch them first, in the consecutive order of the plot, and then watch both parts of the "recalled out summer" movie afterwards. It is of the same high quality as the rest of the movies.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) Very good Ghost in the Shell: SaC and its 2nd season Ghost in the Shell: SaC 2nd GIG are quite an excellent show. It is a somewhat intellectual science fiction show, whose lead character is a hot female cyborg with a "fully prosthetic body" and amazing fighting abilities, and it alternates between intense action-packed sequences and intellectual navel-gazing and boring stuff about Japanese politics, and English text that appears is full of unintentionally hilarious spelling and grammar mistakes. Still, it's quite action-packed, explores a lot of ideas, has an amazing lead character, and is quite well animated, even if the animators included gratuitous English that they didn't even manage to spell right (how could they not have spell-check on their computers?). It's a great show and everyone should watch it (both this first part as well as the second half, 2nd GIG).
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (TV) Very good Ghost in the Shell: SaC and its 2nd season Ghost in the Shell: SaC 2nd GIG are quite an excellent show. It's a great show and everyone should watch it (both the first part as well as this 2nd half).
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Masterpiece One of 3 really great movies directed by Mamoru Hosoda with screenplay by Satoko Okudera (along with Summer Wars and Wolf Children). This one about a girl who can go back in time to fix things that went wrong is quite enjoyable.
Glitter Force (TV)
Gurren Lagann (TV) Masterpiece Probably the best shounen action anime ever made. I don't want to ruin anyone's enjoyment of this by giving away too much about it... just watch it, it's awesome.
Gurren Lagann the Movie – The Lights in the Sky Are Stars Masterpiece This movie summarizes the last 3/5 of the show Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (the final battle of the first half plus the entire second half). The battles go a little differently than in the TV show to be more epic yet take less time, and some of the less interesting stuff from the second half of the show was removed entirely. I liked both of these 2 movies a whole lot. This is the sequel to Gurren Lagann Movie 1: Childhood's End.
Gurren Lagann the Movie –Childhood's End- Masterpiece This movie summarizes the first 2/5 of the show Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (the first half minus its final battle). The battles go a little differently than in the TV show to be more epic yet take less time. I liked both of these 2 movies a whole lot. The sequel to this is Gurren Lagann Movie 2: The Lights in the Sky are Stars.
Hellsing (TV) Excellent Like its remake Hellsing Ultimate, about a vampire named Alucard who hunts other vampires, except not quite as extreme when it comes to being over-the-top and full of blood and violence, and with a plot that diverges a bit from the original manga. Some people might like this version more if they don't like things as over-the-top and full of violence, but then again, that is kinda the whole point of this sort of anime so I prefer Hellsing Ultimate. This show isn't quite as good as Blood+, making it the third-best vampire anime after Hellsing Ultimate and Blood+.
Hellsing Ultimate (OAV) Masterpiece If you want to see hardcore animated violence involving vampires, want to see rivers of blood, want to see the original Dracula going by his backwards-spelled name Alucard going around as the most badass vampire hunter ever, and want it as extreme as possible and to also closely follow the story of the original manga it's based on, watch Hellsing Ultimate, the greatest vampire anime I've seen (Blood+ comes in second). You could also try the original Hellsing if you want something a bit less extreme.
High School DxD (TV) Very good High School DxD is the greatest of all ecchi (perverted) anime shows, since unlike most of the others it actually has plot, characters, and action, along with ecchi/perverted stuff. It's quite a good show and I'd even recommend it to people who AREN'T perverted. The first season of it is just called High School DxD, the second season is called High School DxD New, and the third season is called High School DxD BorN, and obviously they should be watched in order.
High School DxD New (TV) Very good This is the second season of High School DxD, the greatest of all ecchi (perverted) anime shows, since unlike most of the others it actually has plot, characters, and action, along with ecchi/perverted stuff. It's quite a good show and I'd even recommend it to people who AREN'T perverted. The first season of it is just called High School DxD, the second season is called High School DxD New, and the third season is called High School DxD BorN, and obviously they should be watched in order.
Inuyasha (TV) Excellent InuYasha is, in my opinion, by far the best of Rumiko Takahashi's many works, which also include Ranma ½, Urusei Yatsura, and Maison Ikkoku. It is action-packed, romantic, has an excellent storyline and characters, has one of the best villains of any anime, has quite a bit of stuff about Japanese folklore/myths/legends in it, and is just an all-around wonderful franchise. This includes both the original InuYasha show (which doesn't quite finish the story), InuYasha: The Final Act (which continues the story where the first show left off), and all 4 InuYasha movies. InuYasha is the crowning achievement of Rumiko Takahashi's decades of work in manga and anime and something I highly recommend to everyone.
InuYasha the Movie 2: The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass Excellent InuYasha is, in my opinion, by far the best of Rumiko Takahashi's many works, which also include Ranma ½, Urusei Yatsura, and Maison Ikkoku. It is action-packed, romantic, has an excellent storyline and characters, has one of the best villains of any anime, has quite a bit of stuff about Japanese folklore/myths/legends in it, and is just an all-around wonderful franchise. InuYasha the Movie 3: Swords of an Honorable Ruler Excellent InuYasha is, in my opinion, by far the best of Rumiko Takahashi's many works, which also include Ranma ½, Urusei Yatsura, and Maison Ikkoku. InuYasha the Movie 4: Fire on the Mystic Island Excellent InuYasha is, in my opinion, by far the best of Rumiko Takahashi's many works, which also include Ranma ½, Urusei Yatsura, and Maison Ikkoku. It is action-packed, romantic, has an excellent storyline and characters, has one of the best villains of any anime, has quite a bit of stuff about Japanese folklore/myths/legends in it, and is just an all-around wonderful franchise. InuYasha the Movie: Affections Touching Across Time Excellent InuYasha is, in my opinion, by far the best of Rumiko Takahashi's many works, which also include Ranma ½, Urusei Yatsura, and Maison Ikkoku. Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) Masterpiece A teenage witch whose magical skills are not that good ends up running a delivery service where she flies around on a broomstick, something she is not terribly good at either, which is kind of funny.
Kill la Kill (TV) Very good An epic show about girls who fight a lot, strange uniforms that give people superpowers, clothing vs. nudity, lots of fighting, and basically one girl who is a newcomer to a school has to fight everyone else at the school to work her way up to defeating another girl who is student council president. Basically it is a cross between Revolutionary Girl Utena and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann... if you saw either or both of those before you will notice many similarities, which is odd because Revolutionary Girl Utena and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann are quite different shows but this show is quite similar to both of them in different ways. This show also parodies quite a bit of stuff about modern-day Japan, which won't make sense to people who don't know various trivia such as the difference between the Kanto and Kansai regions, and this aspect makes this show much more appealing to Japanese audiences than people from any other country on Earth.
Kiss×sis (OAV) Good Kiss x Sis is nothing but constant fanservice centered around something that is ALMOST incest but not quite. The OVAs are more explicit than the TV version, with actual nudity, but have less plot or character development. They avoid crossing the line from ecchi anime into hentai but come very very very close.
Kiss×sis (TV) Good Kiss x Sis is nothing but constant fanservice centered around something that is ALMOST incest but not quite. The TV version is less explicit than the OVAs and actually has some plot and character development to it, along with appealing to a wide variety of sexual fetishes while still staying within the limits of ecchi anime and not crossing over the line into hentai.
(The) Legend of the Galactic Heroes (OAV) Masterpiece This epic Star Wars/space opera anime about the long quest for galactic domination between, on one side, Reinhard von Lohengramm of the Empire, and, on the other side, Yang Wenli of the rebel Alliance, goes far beyond anything George Lucas ever did with Star Wars regarding military tactics and strategy, political philosophy regarding democracy versus authoritarianism, character development, and a very nuanced understanding of morality that isn't black and white but is full of shades of gray. So while at first glance, an empire fighting a rebel alliance for control of a galaxy seems like it's copied from Star Wars, actually this is much much better, deeper, more nuanced, better written, and better thought out. The main downside is the animation quality is dated, but only because it's a fairly old anime, and if you compare it to the Star Wars movies based on the visual effects that is the one area where it falls quite short. Anyway, this is better than Star Wars movies, and also doesn't rely on any supernatural stuff like "the Force", instead being true science fiction in a future setting in our own galaxy.
Little Witch Academia (movie) Good
Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade (OAV) Good
Lupin III: Part II (TV) Very good This is the most popular version of Lupin III (when compared to Part 1 and Part 3... Part 2 is generally considered the best). It may be a classic anime from long ago (the 70s!) but it still holds up its quality even today. It's all about Lupin III (the greatest thief in the world), and his accomplices Jigen (the greatest gunman in the world), Goeman (the greatest samurai in the world), and Fujiko (the sexiest and most tricky femme fatale in the world), along with Lupin III's arch-rival Detective Zenigata from Interpol (the most incompetent detective in the world). Despite being a thief, Lupin III is the hero of the story and sometimes goes up against various bad guys, and sometimes even teams up with Detective Zenigata to help him out when Zenigata gets himself into too much danger. Although Fujiko is disloyal and constantly betrays him, Lupin III is deeply in love with her and forgives her every single time, much to the dismay of Jigen and Goemon. It's quite a good and creative series although it does get a bit formulaic and repetitive after a lot of episodes.
Magical Girl Pretty Sammy (OAV) Good This is the Magical Girl Pretty Sammy OVA series rather than the TV show or the DVD extras for the show. These OVAs are pretty good and funny and they feature Sasami from the Tenchi Muyo! series as well as some other characters from Tenchi Muyo!, and are basically a parody of other magical girl anime. The characters in them are all almost exactly the same as in Tenchi Muyo! and it is very similar to Tenchi Muyo! In the OVA series Tenchi is Sasami's brother and Ayeka and Ryoko compete for his affections just like in Tenchi Muyo! I suggest watching these OVAs before the TV show.
Magical Girl Pretty Sammy Bonus Theatre (OAV) Good These are the DVD extras for the Magical Girl Pretty Sammy TV show. Not very much there but it is pretty funny. It takes hardly any time to watch but is entirely worth it after watching the show.
Magical Project S (TV) Good This is the Magical Girl Pretty Sammy TV show rather than the OVA series or the DVD extras for the show. The show is quite good and hilarious and features Sasami from the Tenchi Muyo! series as well as some other characters from Tenchi Muyo!, and is basically a parody of other magical girl anime. This show diverges way more from Tenchi Muyo! than the OVA series. Characters appearing like Tenchi and most of the others do appear in this show but some of them are quite different from in the main Tenchi Muyo! franchise. I suggest watching this TV show after the OVAs, and then after that watch the bonus theatre if you have it.
Maison Ikkoku (TV) So-so One word: boring.
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Very good Season 1 of this show is pretty good I guess, although I find Haruhi Suzumiya's character annoying. Season 2 is nowhere near as good but since this is the review for Season 1 I'm giving it a good rating. You should also check out the movie. Just beware of the Endless Eight episodes in Season 2, they have that name for a reason, luckily this is Season 1 which is about a million times better.
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV 2009 renewal) Weak Season 2 of this show is nowhere near as good as season 1, it is like the difference between night and day. Also there are 8 episodes called Endless Eight; I would suggest skipping the first 7 of them and only watching the last of those 8, you aren't missing anything by skipping the first 7 and only watching the last one. If you skip those it's not that bad but if you actually watch all 8 Endless Eight episodes you will NOT enjoy it unless you are seriously a masochist who likes repetitive stuff and watching the same thing over and over again.
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya (ONA) Not really good This super-deformed parody of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is supposed to be a comedy but it's not that funny plus all its episodes are way too short. It's just a shameless attempt to cash in on the popularity of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Still, it occasionally has its funny moments, and it's easy to watch the whole thing in one sitting, so it's not THAT bad.
Monster (TV) Masterpiece Like Death Note, this is a thriller/mystery anime about a serial killer and those trying to catch him, except the main character is actually a genuine hero who is falsely accused of being a serial killer, the show has many more episodes and a much more intricate plot, and unlike most anime, there isn't any supernatural/magic/fantasy stuff going on but instead it is set in the real world. It does make use of overused tropes such as evil twins and amnesia. Also, a lot of aspects of it are based on real things, such as actual brainwashing programs for little children that really did exist in East Germany. Still, some aspects of it strain the bounds of believability at times, like the abilities of various characters to constantly evade being caught by the police or avoid being killed no matter how many times they are in grave danger. Overall it is an excellent show and it is well worth it to watch it all the way through to the magnificent ending. Also FYI, "The Magnificent Steiner" cartoon mentioned in the show is based on "The Incredible Hulk" in the real world, but obviously they had to change it for copyright reasons.
Mushi-Shi (TV) Masterpiece Quite a good show, it's based on a unique idea of a hidden world of lifeforms most people can't see, it is at the same time a little disturbing but strangely calming and relaxing, and it certainly merits the high ratings people give it.
Mushishi Tokubetsu-hen: Hihamukage (special) Masterpiece An excellent special, the same high quality I'd expect from the Mushishi series, except instead of being like a short story like a Mushishi episode, this tells a longer, more intricate tale that is definitely worth watching.
Mushishi: The Next Chapter (TV) Masterpiece A continuation of the original Mushishi that maintains the very high quality of the show and everything about Mushishi that makes it such a unique and special anime.
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) Masterpiece One of the earlier Studio Ghibli films by Hayao Miyazaki, all of which are masterpieces. This one is perhaps the most aimed at small children that I've seen, although it can appeal to any age group and is quite enjoyable for people of any age. My favorite of those films is of course Spirited Away. And the one that is the polar opposite to this one in terms of the age group it is aimed at that I've seen is Princess Mononoke, which is definitely NOT for little kids.
Negima! (TV) Good Both Negima! (the original show) and Negima!? (an alternate retelling) are quite good shows about a boy wizard (remarkably similar to Harry Potter) who is a professor at an all-girls school. The 2 shows have plot differences and various other differences but I like both of them equally. Well OK, I used to like the first show Negima! a little better than the 2nd one Negima!? but more recently I've preferred the second show Negima!? to the first show Negima! so basically I can't make up my mind.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Masterpiece One of the greatest shows ever, the Director's Cut is recommended, and then watch both endings: the original episodes 25 and 26, and the really awesome ending, the End of Evangelion movie.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie) Excellent Basically just a summary of the Neon Genesis Evangelion series, episodes 1-24 (before the ending, which is episodes 25-26). It has a few other things like a string quartet of the main young characters, but mainly it's just a summary of all the most important things from the show, kinda a Cliff Notes version.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Masterpiece I recommend watching this after watching the Director's Cut of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion Series (either all episodes 1-26, or you can skip the last 2 and watch 1-24 then go straight to this movie). One of the best movies ever although it won't make any sense unless you watched the show first.
Nerima Daikon Brothers (TV) Good A pretty funny musical comedy anime. When have you ever heard of a musical comedy anime? This is probably the only one. I liked it quite a bit. I would have rated it higher except some of the music and jokes get a bit repetitive. Just a little bit repetitive, mind you, not THAT much, it's still plenty enough interesting to watch the whole series and keep wanting to watch the next episode after seeing the previous one. As a fan of Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemy, made by the same creator as this, who thought they were some of the best anime ever, I don't think this is quite as funny as them. But the fact that it's a musical and everyone sings all the time certainly sets it apart, in a good way, to compensate for the humor not being quite as funny. And some of the humor is really really funny, but that just happens sometimes. If you'd like to see jokes about Michael Jackson's plastic surgery (despite the fact that Michael Jackson is dead now), this is the show for you. And if you want jokes about Japanese politics that make no sense to an American audience... also the show for you. And although incest is a common theme in anime, this show takes it to the next level by trying to amend the Japanese constitution to legalize incest (which is unnecessary because it's already legal in Japan anyway, which is kinda the whole joke).
No Game, No Life (TV) Very good This show bears some superficial similarities to Sword Art Online (which is also about games and likewise mostly takes place in a fantasy world) and Welcome to the NHK (which also has a hikikimori main character) but actually it is very different from both of them (well OK, it does have some things in common with Sword Art Online but most of it is quite different). Anyway this show is quite unique and original, very funny, has some ecchi elements (especially in the OVAs which for some reason are not listed on Anime News Network), has extremely colorful, eye-catching artwork, has quite unique main characters, and is full of absurdity and humor along with having a fairly good, if predictable, plot, and often it devolves into a self-parody. But it doesn't have quite as much humor or ecchi elements as it could, its characters are pretty one-dimensional even if they are unique, and the predictability of the plot is quite obvious. Still it is a very unique, entertaining, fun show and people should watch it.
Nyoron! Churuya-san (ONA) Weak This super-deformed parody of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is supposed to be a comedy but it's not that funny plus all its episodes are way too short. It's just a shameless attempt to cash in on the popularity of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Still, it occasionally has its funny moments, and it's easy to watch the whole thing in one sitting, so it's not THAT bad.
Outlaw Star (TV) Good Outlaw Star is quite a good, enjoyable show, part of the space western genre that also includes Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. I'd rate it as not quite as good as Cowboy Bebop, but better than Trigun... and I like all 3 of them. Just don't watch the spinoff show based on Outlaw Star known as Angel Links. Angel Links is terrible and should never have been made. Outlaw Star, on the other hand, is quite a good show, not quite as good as Cowboy Bebop, but still pretty good, and I definitely recommend watching it. Whereas I think Cowboy Bebop and Trigun are both overrated due to their popularity and the fact that they were some of the first anime a lot of people watched, Outlaw Star is underrated and ought to be almost as popular as Cowboy Bebop is, although I do admit Cowboy Bebop is a little better than Outlaw Star but not as much as people think.
Panty & Stocking in Sanitarybox (OAV) Good This is basically the same as Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, except this is a series of short shorts that only total about 8 and a half minutes so it is less than half of a regular episode in length. My favorite part is their hack of Super Mario Brothers but only because I like to hack old video games too myself. About half the shorts are sequels to the events of specific episodes, and the other half are standalone shorts, like 1-2 minutes each.
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (TV) Good This show is a trashy adult anime full of swear words, absurdity, sex, and violence, which is mostly a parody of American cartoons such as Powerpuff Girls and other stuff like Transformers, Ghostbusters, etc., inspired by the trashy American show Drawn Together which did something similar as a trashy parody of other cartoons. It's a bit like the final episode of Excel Saga that wasn't allowed on Japanese television. It probably sets a record for the most F-bombs in an English dub of anime. It is simultaneously super-awesome and very low quality. You'll probably either love it or hate it. There is also an OVA, Panty & Stocking in Sanitarybox. Panty and Stocking remind me a lot of Excel and Hyatt from Excel Saga, and Garterbelt is like Lord Il Palazzo. But the original Excel Saga was better than this, funnier. This show is just as raunchy as possible but doesn't pack in quite as many jokes as Excel Saga did. The main thing this is inspired by, though, is Powerpuff Girls and other American cartoons, of course. It is made by people who worked on Kill la Kill, FLCL, and Gurren Lagann who wanted to do something a little different and who thought the final episode of Excel Saga called "Going Too Far" didn't go far enough. My favorite characters aren't the 2 angels, the Anarchy Sisters, but instead the Demon Sisters with their bright red skin and politely evil behavior.
Petit Eva - Evangelion@School (OAV) Weak I would expect far better from the Evangelion franchise than this. It does have a certain simple childish appeal, and since it has pretty much no words, you don't even need it translated. It's all just visual humor. But it seems like a shameless attempt to cash in on the popularity of the Evangelion franchise by putting out something sub-par, at least to me.
Photon: The Idiot Adventures (OAV) Decent This is quite a unique anime from the creators of Tenchi Muyo! It is rather silly, in fact quite silly, and has plenty of nudity, and I found it quite enjoyable. Then again it has low production quality and the writing is slightly below average and it looks rather dated by today's standards. So although I liked it I'm giving it a more mixed score since I can see that it has flaws in it. Still, I'd recommend it to others if they are willing to put up with its obvious flaws, as this is actually quite a fun show.
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (movie) Excellent A really great movie about a weird fish-girl that this kid befriends and the fish-girl's weird sea-person dad who hates humans because they pollute his environment.
Princess Mononoke (movie) Masterpiece This is the epic tale of a prince who gets cursed and is banished from his land, a princess who serves a wolf goddess despite being human who hates humans, the unlikely love between them, and the war between an industrious town of humans and the animals and animal gods inhabiting the wilderness nearby.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) Excellent This is a really really great magical girl show that rather subverts and deconstructs everything people expect about magical girl shows and is actually rather dark and disturbing and not really aimed at little girls at all. It has also been made into movies, of which there are currently 3, 2 of which basically are a remake of this TV show, and the third which continues the story after that.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 1: Beginnings Excellent This movie is a remake of the first half of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica TV show and the first of 3 movies. It is really good, but the 3rd movie is the best.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 2: Eternal Excellent This movie is a remake of the second half of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica TV show and the second of 3 movies. It is really good, but the 3rd movie is the best.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie Part 3: Rebellion Masterpiece This movie continues on after the events of the first 2 Puella Magi Madoka Magica movies (or alternately, the TV series, which shows the same events as the first 2 movies). This movie is really really awesome and completely outdoes the previous awesomeness from earlier stuff in an already great franchise.
Puni Puni Poemy (OAV) Excellent A short OVA comedy series that is similar to the final episode of Excel Saga, which it is kinda loosely based on, this takes the craziness even further than Excel Saga ever went and is utterly ridiculous, in a good way. Everybody (yes everybody) should watch this: but first watch Excel Saga (the funniest anime ever, 100% worth it) and then Puni Puni Poemy. If you thought FLCL had a lot of wacky craziness in its 6 episodes, Puni Puni Poemy packs even more craziness as well as humor into only 2. And in one part it features the fastest talking of any anime show ever (too fast for anyone listening to it to comprehend, whether it's the Japanese or English dub). And of course it has the most absurd ending ever. If you watch this it will make FLCL look utterly normal and typical by comparison. And don't forget to watch Excel Saga first, including the last episode of Excel Saga which was never aired on television because of the censors.
Ranma ½ OAV Good Ranma ½ (the original TV show), along with its OVAs, specials, and movies, is all quite an enjoyable classic 80s anime that has stood the test of time. It is made by the same creator as InuYasha, Urusei Yatsura, and Maison Ikkoku, and is quite a good gender-bending, martial arts-focused comedy that inspired many later shows. All of the Ranma ½ franchise, aside from the quite shoddy live-action special that I recommend avoiding, is quite good and highly recommended. Personally out of Rumiko Takahashi's works, I like InuYasha the best, followed by Urusei Yatsura, then Ranma ½, and lastly Maison Ikkoku. InuYasha has the most action, storyline, and general awesomeness. Urusei Yatsura has space aliens and all sorts of other cool stuff. Ranma ½ has all sorts of absurdist stuff mostly related to people who shape-change in hot and cold water after bathing in cursed hot springs, but those jokes DO get old after awhile. Maison Ikkoku is just about normal everyday life and is just plain boring. Still, Ranma ½ is quite a good show, even if it isn't quite as good as InuYasha and Urusei Yatsura.

Ranma ½ (live-action special) Not really good In recent years the Japanese have been making live-action versions of anime that are usually not at all as good as the anime they are based on. This is a perfect example of that trend. Also, the panda costume looks ridiculous and nothing like a real panda. Talk about a low production budget...

Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV) Masterpiece A symbolism-laced bizarre feminist masterpiece about a school where duels are fought over who gets to be the fiance of a girl called the Rose Bride, this show has a strong female lead character named Utena and plenty of other weird stuff going on that's messed up. At first the show makes more sense but after you get used to it it gets weirder and more messed up later on but the whole thing is awesome. The movie is an alternate retelling of this series but for the movie to make any sense at all you have to watch this series first.
Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie Masterpiece This movie takes the surreality and weird stuff from the original series and amplifies it into a whole new level of awesome, and while it makes less sense than the original series, it's a bit more positive and uplifting and not quite as messed up as the original series. But this more positive message than the somber tone of the series is somewhat muted by the fact that it is done through very difficult-to-understand symbolism that befuddles most viewers. This movie is an alternate retelling of the series but for this movie to make any sense at all you have to watch the series first.
Robotics;Notes (TV) Good This show is the 3rd installment of the Science Adventure Series, or as I call it, the Semi;Colon Series, the first one being Chaos;Head (which I loved although some other people didn't), and the second one being Steins;Gate (which I thought was the greatest anime ever made, period). While some other people seem to like Robotics;Notes better than Chaos;Head but think Steins;Gate was the best, I like Chaos;Head better than Robotics;Notes but agree Steins;Gate is the best. Anyway this anime is about a high school's robotics club and their quest to build an actual giant robot, as well as several other things that I won't mention since they would be spoilers. It's pretty good but since I've seen some REALLY good anime I can't rank it as highly as the REALLY good stuff. My biggest beef with this particular anime is that I actually find it a little bit boring... it's not THAT boring, just a little bit. The main thing that manages to hold my interest is not the plot, which is a little nonsensical and is rather slow-paced and boring until near the ending, but the characters and how they interact and develop, and how I feel emotionally invested in them. I think this anime would have been better if they had compressed it into a smaller number of episodes but kept all the plot, thus making it faster-paced and less boring... if its plot had been compressed into 13 episodes it would have turned out much better. Then again, that would have meant less character development which is the thing I actually liked most about the show, so I'm not quite sure about that idea. Also, this anime is full of deliberate shout-outs to earlier anime series, including Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate, and Neon Genesis Evangelion, among others, and it's good to see this anime paying credit to other shows that came before it. Lastly, I wish the creators of this anime and the game it's based on would release the Kill-Ballad game that appears in this anime, or would produce the Gunvarrel anime that appears in this anime.
Rosario + Vampire (TV) Good Rosario+Vampire (both its first season and the second season known as "Capu2") is a fairly good, somewhat ecchi/perverted anime about a high school for monsters that ISN'T part of the American Monster High franchise, and is obviously better than Monster High. The 2 main characters are a human guy who mistakenly ends up in this high school for monsters, and his wonderful vampire girlfriend who has multiple personalities. He acquires a harem of female monsters that all love him, and his vampire girlfriend is pretty much unbeatable in fights after she changes from her shy, innocent, lovey-dovey personality to her domineering, badass, beating-people-up personality. The show is a little bit repetitious and more than a little formulaic in how it follows so many common anime tropes, and the panty shots are very very excessive whereas it could use a little more breasts in its fanservice (the ratio is a bit off). Still, it's quite entertaining and I certainly liked watching it.

Samurai Champloo (TV) Very good This show is very similar to the American cartoon The Boondocks, mostly because The Boondocks is heavily inspired by Samurai Champloo and copies its style quite a bit. It's a rebellious-minded hip-hop anime that takes place hundreds of years ago, around the time the Tokugawa Shogunate took over Japan at the end of the Warring States Era, and the show is full of stuff from modern times that doesn't belong in such a medieval setting. The 3 main characters are 2 samurai who can't stand each other and a girl who employs both of them and is on a quest to find her father. And it turns out in medieval Japan everyone loved rap music. Anyway it's an awesome show and pretty unique, the only thing like it I've seen being The Boondocks which isn't even an anime but Western animation instead. Most of the show is actually inspired by African-American culture, and the show tries to draw parallels between that and the culture of feudal Japan. If you like historical inaccuracy that's full of deliberate anachronisms put there on purpose to set the mood, you'll love this show.
Sasami: Magical Girls Club (TV) Weak This show is boring and the only people I could imagine finding it interesting are little girls. It is nowhere near as good as the Magical Girl Pretty Sammy TV show or OVAs, which I enjoyed quite a bit.
Sasami: Magical Girls Club Season 2 (TV) Weak This show is boring and the only people I could imagine finding it interesting are little girls. It is nowhere near as good as the Magical Girl Pretty Sammy TV show or OVAs, which I enjoyed quite a bit.
(The) Secret World of Arrietty (movie) Excellent This is a very nice little movie about little people who are the size of insects, their trials and tribulations, and what happens when full-size humans find out about them. Did I mention it was little? Everything is little. A bunch of Lilliputians, basically.
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) So-so A weird, confusing anime that makes little if any sense. Re-watching it to try and make more sense out of it doesn't help very much. I don't know whether to give it a high score or a low score so I'm settling for one in between.
(The) Seven Deadly Sins (TV)
Shin chan (TV) Very good Despite the incredibly ugly animation quality (if you can call such a deliberately badly drawn show "quality"), this show is incredibly funny, especially the English dub made by Funimation (as opposed to other English dubs). The original Japanese version of Shin-chan is said to be quite funny, but Funimation's gag dub of this show turns that up to 11 and completely rewrites the entire scripts of the episodes they released... they are not translations at all but completely rewritten from scratch. The only anime funnier than this is Excel Saga and its spinoff OVA series Puni Puni Poemy. Anyway, the Funimation dub of this has 3 seasons, each one containing 26 episodes, for a total of 78 episodes. The original Japanese series, on the other hand, started coming out with episodes in 1992 and is still coming out with new episodes every week, and is now up to 874 episodes by Wiikipedia's latest count, more than 10 times as many. Obviously I only watched the Funimation dub of 78 episodes and have not watched the entire Japanese series. It should be noted that the English-language voice actress who plays the little boy Shin-chan also plays Lust in the Fullmetal Alchemist Franchise, so she has quite a versatile voice. Anyway watch the 78-episode Funimation dub, it's funny... and since Season 3 never aired on TV it gets quite racy indeed and has dialogue that would never get past the censors for American television. The type of humor in this show is very similar to the American cartoon South Park, and definitely better than Family Guy/Seth MacFarlane-style humor.
Soul Eater (TV) Excellent A wonderful shinigami action show (other shinigami shows including Bleach and Death Note). While I wouldn't say it's quite as good as Bleach or Death Note since they are so amazing, Soul Eater is still one of my favorite shows, with plenty of plot twists, character development, and fighting, and it has quite a well-done ending. My biggest complaint with this show is it doesn't have enough Blair... she appears in the first episode and is a regular character later on but I wish I saw her more often and that she took a more prominent role in the show. I just love Blair. Anyway, watch it or I'll take your soul! And if you like it, watch the prequel Soul Eater NOT! afterwards, which tells more about the backstory of various characters and has the same animation and voice actors, but is a different genre, less focused on action, more focused on the trials and tribulations of 3 girls who are friends. Also if you like this show, watch Bleach to see another shinigami action show which is arguably even better.
Soul Eater Not! (TV) So-so This is the prequel to the excellent show Soul Eater, although it should be watched AFTER Soul Eater rather than before. Rather than being action-packed like Soul Eater, this is mostly about 3 girls who are friends and their trials and tribulations, but it also reveals all sorts of backstory details about characters from the original Soul Eater. It isn't quite as good as Soul Eater, but if you are a fan of Soul Eater who wants to know more backstory about its characters, and are willing to watch something with a different mood that is less focused on action than the friendship between 3 girls, you'll like it too. I wouldn't bother watching this if you haven't already watched and enjoyed Soul Eater, though. Also, if you are expecting this to be just like Soul Eater was and just as good, try reading the description of the show or noticing "NOT!" in the title of the show. And if you really like the stuff about a group of girls who are friends and fight evil together, I'd suggest Puella Magi Madoka Magica (both the show and its 3 movies), as Puella Magi Madoka Magica handles that topic better than any other anime.
Spaceship Agga Ruter (OAV) Worst ever I'm not really into hentai and only watched this because it had the same creator as Tenchi Muyo! and I thought it might be interesting. But it's so bad it got canceled after just 4 episodes. It's mildly amusing but I've seen far better and far funnier ecchi anime, and if you do classify it as hentai, it's not very explicit so there's not that much to interest people. Maybe some people might like this show ironically with some kind of "it's so bad it's good" attitude, and I understand that, but I am giving it a very bad rating because I'm trying to be honest about how bad it is.
Spirited Away (movie) Masterpiece Studio Ghibli is basically the Japanese equivalent of Disney, known for making several top-quality animated movies suitable for children to watch. This is the best Studio Ghibli film I have seen and one of my favorite anime movies. The animation quality on this is just amazing especially compared to other anime made around the same time.
Steins;Gate (TV) Masterpiece The best anime series ever made. Period. It has science fiction. It has comedy. It has drama. It has a little tasteful fanservice but nothing too excessive. It has everything, and appeals to everyone. It is the greatest anime ever. After you watch it be sure to watch the Deja Vu movie.
Steins;Gate: The Movie - Load Region of Déjà Vu Masterpiece This movie is a sequel to the events of the greatest anime series ever made ever, Steins;Gate. It is quite a dramatic, romantic, and moving sci-fi masterpiece whose only real failing is the lack of the comedy that was present through most of the original series. Obviously you need to watch the Steins;Gate series before watching this movie or else it won't make any sense.
Summer Wars (movie) Masterpiece One of 3 really great movies directed by Mamoru Hosoda with screenplay by Satoko Okudera (along with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Wolf Children). This one about a rogue AI taking over a digital world along with the drama of a large extended family reunion is quite a fun adventure in both the real and digital worlds of this story.
Sword Art Online (TV) Excellent Sword Art Online is one of my favorite shows and the show excels in all areas, enough said, now watch it... then watch the Extra Edition OVA and the second season, Sword Art Online II.
Sword Art Online II (TV) Excellent This second season of Sword Art Online is just as good as the first and continues to be one of my favorite shows that excels in all areas.
Sword Art Online: Extra Edition (special) Excellent This special occurs after the first season (the original Sword Art Online) but before the second Season (Sword Art Online II). Although about half of it is just summarizing events, half of it is also new content which is quite good and the same high quality as the rest of the show. It also helps set things up for the second season (Sword Art Online II), so it should be watched after season 1 and before season 2.
Tales of Phantasia (OAV) Bad Tales of Phantasia is one of the best Japanese console Role Playing Games ever made. This anime is nowhere near as good and lacks every single one of the qualities that the game had which made it enjoyable. Anyone who played the game Tales of Phantasia who watches this will be quite disappointed by how inferior it is to the game. As for people who didn't play the game, well, if you have any interest in either Tales of Phantasia the OVA series or Tales of Phantasia the console game, I'd suggest the console game instead of the OVA series. The OVA series isn't actually terrible or anything, it just fails to come anywhere close to the high standards set by the game it is based on, which is rather remarkable, because all they needed to do was animate the plot of the game and include all the characters from the game and all the interesting things that happen in the game and use all the wonderful music from the game and it would have made a good anime. But instead they left out half the characters, left out 90% of the plot, and used completely different music that isn't even remotely as good. The only real positive about this was the voice acting which helped to make it not quite as bad and a little more bearable to sit through.
Team Ranma vs. The Legendary Phoenix (movie) Good Ranma ½ (the original TV show), along with its OVAs, specials, and movies, is all quite an enjoyable classic 80s anime that has stood the test of time.
Tenchi Forever!: The Movie Decent This is the third of 3 Tenchi Muyo! movies that are more or less in the same continuity as the Tenchi Universe TV series (rather than the more "canonical" continuity of the OVA series). It's the best of the 3 movies.
Tenchi in Tokyo (TV) Awful There are a whole bunch of Tenchi Muyo!-related anime series, OVAs, movies, etc. A majority of them are pretty good and very enjoyable. However, this is the worst of them, the least enjoyable by FAR. The plot is rather nonexistent and full of plot holes, the character development is quite bad, and the characters that appear in this show but not in other Tenchi Muyo! shows are all quite badly written and don't belong in ANY shows. Furthermore, the Tenchi of this show is a complete moron who never learns from his mistakes, and he dumps his harem of beautiful alien girls who care about him to date a girl who is nothing but trouble, is completely unlikable, and has no redeeming qualities. And of course, the humor that is ever-present in other Tenchi Muyo! shows, as well as any sort of interesting action sequences, are completely absent in this boring, uninteresting show, which totally sucks right from the beginning of the first episode all the way through the ending of the last episode. Do not watch this, even if you LOVE all the other Tenchi Muyo! stuff... it will ruin it for you.
Tenchi Muyo! (OAV 1/1992) Good This is the first of 3 parts of the Tenchi Muyo! OVA series, and is pretty good. So first there is THIS part 1 of the OVA series, then the Night Before the Carnival OVA, then the Mihoshi Special OVA, then part 2 of the OVA series, then part 3 of the OVA series, then the Final Confrontations OVA.
Tenchi Muyo! GXP (TV) Decent This amusing side story to the main Tenchi Muyo! story takes place with the Galaxy Police and features someone from Tenchi's hometown, Seina Yamada, as the main character, along with mostly different characters from other Tenchi Muyo! shows but a few characters that are in common from the 2nd and 3rd OVA series (most notably Ayeka and Sasami's grandmother "The Devil Princess of Jurai" is an important character in this show).
Tenchi Muyo! Mihoshi Special Good This funny special happens in between OVA series parts 1 and 2 and is pretty good. It's the inspiration for the spinoffs of Magical Girl Pretty Sammy as well as Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo because it introduces the character Kiyone who isn't in the continuity of the OVA series. So first there is part 1 of the OVA series, then the Night Before the Carnival OVA, then THIS Mihoshi Special OVA, then part 2 of the OVA series, then part 3 of the OVA series, then the Final Confrontations OVA.
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki (OAV 3/2003) Decent This is the third of 3 parts of the Tenchi Muyo! OVA series, and is not as good as parts 1-2 or the earlier OVAs. So first there is part 1 of the OVA series, then the Night Before the Carnival OVA, then the Mihoshi Special OVA, then part 2 of the OVA series, then THIS part 3 of the OVA series, then the Final Confrontations OVA.
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki: Final Confrontations (OAV) Decent This OVA is the conclusion to the 3rd and final part of the Tenchi Muyo! OVA series, and is not as good as parts 1-2 or the earlier OVAs. So first there is part 1 of the OVA series, then the Night Before the Carnival OVA, then the Mihoshi Special OVA, then part 2 of the OVA series, then part 3 of the OVA series, then THIS Final Confrontations OVA.
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (OAV 2/1994) Good This is the second of 3 parts of the Tenchi Muyo! OVA series, and is pretty good. So first there is part 1 of the OVA series, then the Night Before the Carnival OVA, then the Mihoshi Special OVA, then THIS part 2 of the OVA series, then part 3 of the OVA series, then the Final Confrontations OVA.
Tenchi Muyo! The Night Before The Carnival (OAV) Good This OVA happens after the events of part 1 and part 2 of the Tenchi Muyo! OVA series, and is pretty good. So first there is part 1 of the OVA series, then THIS Night Before the Carnival OVA, then the Mihoshi Special OVA, then part 2 of the OVA series, then part 3 of the OVA series, then the Final Confrontations OVA.
Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar (OAV) Good This show takes place entirely on the planet Geminar which does not occur in any other Tenchi Muyo! shows and has totally different characters too, featuring Tenchi Masaki's younger half-brother Kenshi Masaki. The episodes are an hour long and it has giant robot fighting and plenty of fanservice but it is quite different from other Tenchi Muyo! shows.
Tenchi the Movie - Tenchi Muyo in Love So-so This is the first of 3 Tenchi Muyo! movies that are more or less in the same continuity as the Tenchi Universe TV series (rather than the more "canonical" continuity of the OVA series). It's better than the 2nd movie but not as good as the 3rd movie.
Tenchi The Movie 2 - The Daughter of Darkness Not really good This is the second of 3 Tenchi Muyo! movies that are more or less in the same continuity as the Tenchi Universe TV series (rather than the more "canonical" continuity of the OVA series). It's the worst of the 3 movies.
Tenchi Universe (TV) Very good This TV adaptation of Tenchi Muyo! is one I personally like better than the OVA series although both are pretty good. It has a different continuity and storyline than the OVA series but I actually like the Tenchi Universe one better.
Trigun (TV) Very good Out of the 3 quite good space cowboy shows released by Sunrise in the late 90s, Cowboy Bebop is my favorite, Outlaw Star is 2nd favorite, and Trigun is 3rd favorite. But I still like Trigun quite a bit, and the unique charm of the character Vash the Stampede. It was one of the first anime I saw and a main reason I got hooked on anime. Trigun has a movie sequel called Badlands Rumble so obviously you watch the movie after the main series. The movie isn't quite as good as the main series.
Trigun: Badlands Rumble (movie) Decent This movie is the sequel to the TV series Badlands Rumble, one of several 90s space westerns. It's not quite as good as the main series but if you liked Trigun you'll probably like the Badlands Rumble movie too, although maybe not quite as much. Obviously it should be watched after the Trigun series.
Urusei Yatsura (TV 1981) Very good Urusei Yatsura (the original TV series, the OVAs and specials, and the 6 movies) is my 2nd favorite of Rumiko Takahashi's works after InuYasha, but better than Ranma ½ or Maison Ikkoku (all of which I liked except for boring Maison Ikkoku which is boring). This classic 80s anime is actually quite good indeed, and the various love triangles involving space aliens and all sorts of bizarre, funny things happening all the time are endlessly amusing.
Urusei Yatsura OVA Series Very good Urusei Yatsura (the original TV series, the OVAs and specials, and the 6 movies) is my 2nd favorite of Rumiko Takahashi's works after InuYasha, but better than Ranma ½ or Maison Ikkoku (all of which I liked except for boring Maison Ikkoku which is boring). This classic 80s anime is actually quite good indeed, and the various love triangles involving space aliens and all sorts of bizarre, funny things happening all the time are endlessly amusing.
Urusei Yatsura Special: It's Spring! Take Off! Very good Urusei Yatsura (the original TV series, the OVAs and specials, and the 6 movies) is my 2nd favorite of Rumiko Takahashi's works after InuYasha, but better than Ranma ½ or Maison Ikkoku (all of which I liked except for boring Maison Ikkoku which is boring). This classic 80s anime is actually quite good indeed, and the various love triangles involving space aliens and all sorts of bizarre, funny things happening all the time are endlessly amusing.
Urusei Yatsura: Always My Darling (movie 6) Very good Urusei Yatsura (the original TV series, the OVAs and specials, and the 6 movies) is my 2nd favorite of Rumiko Takahashi's works after InuYasha, but better than Ranma ½ or Maison Ikkoku (all of which I liked except for boring Maison Ikkoku which is boring). This classic 80s anime is actually quite good indeed, and the various love triangles involving space aliens and all sorts of bizarre, funny things happening all the time are endlessly amusing.
Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer (movie 2) Very good Urusei Yatsura (the original TV series, the OVAs and specials, and the 6 movies) is my 2nd favorite of Rumiko Takahashi's works after InuYasha, but better than Ranma ½ or Maison Ikkoku (all of which I liked except for boring Maison Ikkoku which is boring). This classic 80s anime is actually quite good indeed, and the various love triangles involving space aliens and all sorts of bizarre, funny things happening all the time are endlessly amusing.
Urusei Yatsura: Lum The Forever (movie 4) Very good Urusei Yatsura (the original TV series, the OVAs and specials, and the 6 movies) is my 2nd favorite of Rumiko Takahashi's works after InuYasha, but better than Ranma ½ or Maison Ikkoku (all of which I liked except for boring Maison Ikkoku which is boring). This classic 80s anime is actually quite good indeed, and the various love triangles involving space aliens and all sorts of bizarre, funny things happening all the time are endlessly amusing.
Urusei Yatsura: Only You (movie 1) Very good Urusei Yatsura (the original TV series, the OVAs and specials, and the 6 movies) is my 2nd favorite of Rumiko Takahashi's works after InuYasha, but better than Ranma ½ or Maison Ikkoku (all of which I liked except for boring Maison Ikkoku which is boring). This classic 80s anime is actually quite good indeed, and the various love triangles involving space aliens and all sorts of bizarre, funny things happening all the time are endlessly amusing.
Urusei Yatsura: Remember My Love (movie 3) Very good Urusei Yatsura (the original TV series, the OVAs and specials, and the 6 movies) is my 2nd favorite of Rumiko Takahashi's works after InuYasha, but better than Ranma ½ or Maison Ikkoku (all of which I liked except for boring Maison Ikkoku which is boring). This classic 80s anime is actually quite good indeed, and the various love triangles involving space aliens and all sorts of bizarre, funny things happening all the time are endlessly amusing.
Urusei Yatsura: The Final Chapter (movie 5) Very good Urusei Yatsura (the original TV series, the OVAs and specials, and the 6 movies) is my 2nd favorite of Rumiko Takahashi's works after InuYasha, but better than Ranma ½ or Maison Ikkoku (all of which I liked except for boring Maison Ikkoku which is boring). This classic 80s anime is actually quite good indeed, and the various love triangles involving space aliens and all sorts of bizarre, funny things happening all the time are endlessly amusing.
Welcome to the NHK (TV) So-so This show is OK but I find the main character annoying, stupid, gullible, completely lacking in common sense, and very hard to sympathize with. It does explain the situation with hikikimori in Japan quite well and is certainly interesting but I found it hard to get past my annoyance with the main character who is just completely clueless and not in a good way. Also, the situations in this show very often strain believability. So not only do I have a hard time putting up with the annoying main character, I also have a hard time finding some parts of the plot even remotely plausible, which, since this show is meant to be set in the real world and not involve the supernatural, is a problem. Some shows have completely implausible plots or unlikeable characters but they are meant to be that way on purpose and relish in it, but I feel like this show has those flaws by accident due to a failure by the people who wrote it. Despite that, this show is quite interesting and worth watching, it might just annoy you at times if you are anything like me.
Wolf Children (movie) Masterpiece A great movie about a romance with a werewolf and the challenges of raising children who also happen to be werewolves as well as the challenges of growing up as a werewolf, neither fully human nor fully wolf.
Your Lie in April (TV)
Yuki Yuna Is a Hero (TV)
