Ghost in the Shell Debuts at #3, Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome at #7 in Japan

Paramount Pictures' live-action Ghost in the Shell film debuted at #3 at the Japanese box office. Rupert Sanders' film opened on 327 screens on Friday.

Masaaki Yuasa's anime film of The Tatami Galaxy and The Eccentric Family author Tomihiko Morimi's Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome (The Night is Short, So Walk, Girl) novel debuted at #7. The film opened on 120 screens on Friday.

Eiga Doraemon: Nobita no Nankyoku Kachi Kochi Daibōken (Doraemon the Movie 2017: Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi), the 37th anime film in the Doraemon franchise, dropped from #3 to #4 in its sixth weekend. The film stayed at #3 for three consecutive weeks. The current 12-installment Doraemon film series that began with the 2006 film Doraemon: Nobita no Kyōryū (after the 2005 premiere of the ongoing television series) has earned over 40 billion yen (about US$361 million).

The live-action film of Mika Yamamori's Hirunaka no Ryūsei (Daytime Shooting Star) manga dropped from #5 to #6 in its third weekend. The film opened in Japan on March 24 on 272 screens. Takehiko Shinjō (live-action Your Lie in April, Paradise Kiss, Boku no Hatsukoi wo Kimi ni Sasagu) directed the film, and Naoko Adachi (live-action Shitsuren Chocolatier) wrote the script. It stars Mei Nagano, Shōhei Miura, and Alan Shirahama.

The live-action film adaptation of Maki Miyoshi's P to JK romantic comedy manga dropped from #6 to #9 in its third weekend. The film opened in Japan on March 25 on 303 screens. The film stars Kazuya Kamenashi and Tao Tsuchiya in the lead roles. Ryūichi Hiroki (live-action Strobe Edge, live-action Wolf Girl & Black Prince) directed the film, and Nami Kikkawa wrote the script.

Gekijōban Kuroko no Basuke Last Game (Kuroko's Basketball The Movie: Last Game), the anime film adaptation of Tadatoshi Fujimaki's Kuroko no Basuke Extra Game sequel manga, rose from #13 to #10 in its fourth weekend. The film had dropped off the ranking in its second weekend. The film opened in Japan on March 18 on 91 screens. The film ranked #6 in attendance and #1 in its per-screen average in its opening weekend.

As of this past weekend, Makoto Shinkai's your name. film has earned a cumulative 24.87 billion yen (about US$223 million). The film dropped off the ranking last week after 29 straight weekend in the top 10. The #3 movie of all time in Japan, Frozen earned 25.48 billion yen (about US$230 million).

The Kamen Rider x Super Sentai: Chō Superhero Taisen (Ultra Superhero War) film dropped off the ranking in its third weekend.

Update: While Ghost in the Shell ranked #3 in attendance, it ranked #2 over Moana in money earned, due to the higher prices of premium screenings with IMAX or immersive technologies like MX4D and 4DX.
