Philippine channel HERO TV announced on Monday that it will air the Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal original video anime (OVA) in 2017.
The four-episode OVA is a prequel to the Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin) television anime, and it begins in protagonist Kenshin's childhood. The anime follows him as he is captured by slavers, and as he eventually survives to meet the master who would teach him his signature style of swordsmanship. Kenshin eventually runs away, forsaking his duty to fight his master to join the burgeoning Boshin War on the side of the Imperial restorationists with the aim of preventing more tragedies that resulted in his lot in life. In this conflict, he earns his reputation as the merciless assassin Battousai.
The OVA debuted in 1999.
HERO TV will begin airing Samurai X with a new Tagalog dub on December 29.
Samurai X is the television anime adaptation of Nobuhiro Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin manga. Watsuki first launched his Rurouni Kenshin manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1994. The manga centers around Kenshin Himura, once a deadly assassin during the Meiji Restoration, who is trying to find a new life beyond violence. The title Samurai X is Sony Pictures' title for the franchise in areas outside of the United States.
The 95-episode television anime series ran from 1996 to 1998. ABS-CBN premiered the anime in the Philippines in 1999. QTV also aired the anime in 2006.
