posted on by Karen Ressler
The upcoming Kikaider Reboot film revealed its first two visuals on Wednesday, showing the designs for the hero Kikaider and his rival Hakaider. The film, which is a remake of the Jinzou Ningen Kikaider 1970s television series, will open in Japan on May 24.
In addition, Daisuke Ban, who starred as the protagonist Jiro in the original series, will join the film's cast.
Jingi Irie (Risō no Musuko, Take Five) will replace Jiro in the new film and Aimi Satsukawa (Nezumi, Edo wo Hashiru; True Love) will play Dr. Komyoji's daughter Mitsuko. Other cast members will include Kazushige Nagashima, Hirotarō Honda, and Ryūji Harada.
Ten Shimoyama (SHINOBI - Heart Under Blade, Blood) will direct the film. The script was developed over a period of two years.
The film's story will take place in a future where the "Ark Project" uses robots to solve problems that the Japanese government can't solve with human power alone. When robot engineering expert Nobuhiko Komyoji dies, his rivals steal his plans and start causing chaos until a conscious robot Jiro (Kikaider), created by Komyoji, appears as the hero.
The Kikaider television series aired in Japan from 1972-1973. It inspired the Android Kikaider - The Animation anime series, Kikaider-01: The Animation and Guitar o Motta Shōnen - Kikaider vs. Inazuman original anime video series, Kikaider-01 live-action sequel series, and Tobidasu Jinzō Ningen Kikaidā live-action movie.
