3rd Madoka Magica Film Sells 1.3 Million Tickets

The official website for Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie -Rebellion- (Gekijō-ban Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica [Shinpen]: Hangyaku no Monogatari) announced on Thursday that the film has sold more than 1.3 million tickets in the seven weeks since it opened in Japan on October 26. To thank Madoka Magica supporters, theaters screening the film began offering the "Majo Zukan -Witches Artwork-" book (pictured right) on Saturday.
Bunka Tsushin reported that the film earned 24,905,451 yen (about US$241,359) for a cumulative total of 1,848,000,281 yen (US$17.9 million) as of December 8. With a final box office total of about 1.9 billion yen, the K-ON! film has been the highest grossing film from a late-night television anime. The third Madoka Magica film ranked 11th on Bunka Tsushin's list of top-grossing films for December 7-8.
Box Office Mojo lists different figures for the third Madoka Magica film on the same weekend. According to the website, the film reports that the film earned 24,898,195 yen (about US$241,288) in 128 theaters in Japan during the December 7-8 weekend, for a gross-to-date of 1,903,310,658 yen (US$18.4 million). The film ranked 8th on the website's list of films with the highest gross for that weekend.
The film debuted at #1 by selling 271,279 tickets for 436 million yen (about US$4.47 million) in its opening weekend. It then dropped to #2 in box office earnings its second weekend. (It dropped to #3 in the raw number of tickets sold.) It earned over 1 billion yen (US$10 million) by its 13th day on November 7. The film sold more than 1 million tickets in its first 21 days.
