Viz in "Active Negotiations" on Rumiko Takahashi Anime Titles
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
When asked during last week's ANNCast whether Viz Media will consider re-licensing the anime adaptations of Rumiko Takahashi's Ranma 1/2 and Maison Ikkoku series, Viz Media's senior manager of animation marketing Charlene Ingram stated that she "can't say anything right now." Brian Ige, Vice President, Animation at Viz Media, said that his company is in "active negotiations on some of the titles you mention."
Viz Media previously released all seven seasons of Ranma 1/2 television anime, the movies, and original anime videos on VHS and DVD. Viz also released Maison Ikkoku in eight DVD box sets from 2003-2006. Both series is currently out of print in the United States.
Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikkoku, and Urusei Yatsura will be re-released in region-free Blu-ray box sets in Japan as part of publisher Shogukukan's 90th anniversary and Rumiko Takahashi's 35th anniversary since becoming a manga creator.
Update: Ige mentioned the negotiations over the titles.
