North American manga and anime distributor Viz Media announced at its Anime Expo panel on Sunday that the Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal manga series will join the lineup of its digital anthology Shonen Jump Alpha. The monthly serialization of Kazuki Takahashi, Shin Yoshida, and Naohito Miyoshi's manga will begin on July 9. Viz is publishing the 1st compiled print volume (pictured right) of the manga this week.
The near-future story revolves around Yūma Tukumo, a 13-year-old rookie duelist, and Astral, the mysterious lifeform from a parallel world who suddenly appears before Yūma.
Shueisha revealed the Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal anime and manga project in December 2010. The manga is currently running in Shueisha's V Jump magazine in Japan. The anime premiered in Japan in April 2011, and CW4Kids Toonzai began airing the series in North America in October.
Update: Viz also confirmed that it will offer digital manga through devices running the Android operating system.
