Tezuka Manga Moves to iPad in English with New Pricing

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Tezuka Osamu Magazine Club, a new iPad application for Osamu Tezuka manga, launched in English last Wednesday. Tezuka Productions joined forces with SOBA Project, Inc. to create this digital archive. A version incorporating all Tezuka's works was available in Japanese last January.

English Tezuka manga have been available on the Apple iPhone (and later iPad) since 2009, but the new app is exclusive to the iPad and has a new pricing system. The Tezuka Osamu Magazine Club application is available for free, but a US$9.99 per month subscription gains users access to 62 volumes of Tezuka's works currently translated into English. With the former application, users could pay a fee for weekly installments.

Included in this subscription are 39 episodes of "Motion Manga," which has camera-panning views of manga panels with sound effects and vocal performances.

The availability of the Tezuka Osamu Magazine Club app comes after a group of 39 of Japan's biggest publishers announced a beta version of the official online manga distribution website Jmanga.
