Sugar Sugar Rune's Anno Back at Work After 18 Months
posted on by Egan Loo
Manga artist Moyoco Anno (Flowers and Bees, Happy Mania, Sugar Sugar Rune, Sakuran) has announced in a Thursday blog entry that she is returning to major drawing work again, after an 18-month hiatus due to her health. She illustrated a full-page "Girls Power" spread for Takarajimasha in the Thursday morning edition of the Mainichi Shimbun paper (pictured at right). Other than her Ochibi-san newspaper comic, it is her first major artwork since March of 2008. (She did contribute to Shu Uemura's Tokyo Kamon Girls makeup bottle designs earlier this summer.)
At the time she stopped most of her work, Anno was serializing her Hataraki Man manga in Kodansha's Morning magazine. Anno acknowledges that it would be difficult to draw at the same pace that she did before her break, but she plans to gradually work up to that level again. She first plans to do touch-up work on Hataraki Man, as well as launch a short story collection that was put on hold. She thanks her readers for their patience.
Viz Media published Anno's Flowers and Bees manga in North America, Tokyopop published Happy Mania, and Del Rey has been releasing Sugar Sugar Rune. Anno also designed characters for her husband Hideaki Anno's Cutie Honey live-action film adaptation, which Bandai Entertainment released on DVD.
