Japanese Animation DVD Ranking, August 17-23

Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro has been on Oricon's weekly chart of the top 300 top-selling DVDs for a record 400 weeks over the past seven years. In 363 of those weeks, it was in the top 100. The next two DVDs that have lasted the longest on Oricon's charts are also Miyazaki works: Laputa, Castle in the Sky (358 weeks, including 136 in the top 100) and Kiki's Delivery Service (348 weeks, including 82 in the top 100). Before DVDs, Totoro was #5 in videocassette sales with 480,000 copies sold since June of 1997.
Comedian Hiroshi Shinagawa's live-action film adaptation of his own semi-autobiographical Drop novel sold 23,012 standard edition DVDs to land at #1. The special edition sold 21,337 copies to debut at #2.
