posted on by Egan Loo
Various Japanese media sources have reported on the unveiling of the Gundam monument at Tokyo's Kamiigusa train station on Sunday, including Famitsu, Mainichi Shimbun, Asahi Shimbun , Ryukyu Shimpo, and Gundam.info. The TBS station has posted a video report. Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, Sunrise president Takayuki Yoshii, and a Sgt. Frog cosplayer attended the ceremony. It took a petition from 2,400 local residents, two years, and 20 million yen (about US$200,000) to build the three-meter-tall bronze statue. The cost included 2 million yen (US$20,000) in national government funds.

Update: The animeanime.jp website notes that the "blog" of the Namisuke character mascot has posted details and pictures of the monument's molten-bronze forging. The Namisuke anime character mascot represents Suginami, the municipal district in Tokyo where the Gundam monument was erected. Also, the 2,400-local-resident statistic was corrected.
