Japan's am/pm to Sell Macross Frontier Cream Puffs
posted on by Egan Loo
Not-So-Daily-Link of the Day: The am/pm Japan company has announced that it will be selling official Macross Frontier Cream Puffs to mark the 25th anniversary of the first Macross anime series and the April 4 premiere of the Macross Frontier sequel. Starting on March 25, the am/pm convenience stores will offer "Lanka's Delicious DekaruCha Puffs," a 168-yen (US$1.57) pastry filled with green-tea-flavored cream and whipped cream. The stores will also offer "Sheryl's Galaxy Cream" puffs with custard and whipped cream for 158-yen (US$1.48). The Japanese am/pm stores are even more ubiquitous than their American counterparts, and can be found in most neighborhoods in every city in Japan.
In the Macross Frontier robot/romance adventure series, Lanka is the high school student who dreams of being a singer, and Sheryl is the most popular idol singer in the year A.D. 2059. "DekaruCha" is a wordplay on the Japanese word for tea (cha) and the alien expletive ("Dekarucha!") heard in Macross stories. Coincidentally, one of the albums that Macross Frontier composer Yoko Kanno created for the earlier Macross Plus project was called The Cream P*U*F. Victor Entertainment revealed last week that it will be releasing two singles for Kanno's Frontier theme songs, including the opening theme "Triangular" sung by Maaya Sakamoto (Escaflowne, Wolf's Rain, Tsubasa).
In related news, the toy and hobby manufacturer Bandai announced at last month's Wonder Festival in Tokyo that it will be making a 1/72 model of Frontier's transformable VF-25 robot fighter, as well as 1/60 and 1/100 toys.
