Maaya Sakamoto to Sing Macross Frontier Opening Theme
posted on by Egan Loo
Maaya Sakamoto, the popular voice actress who starred in Vision of Escaflowne, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, and RahXephon, and sang theme songs for Escaflowne, Wolf's Rain, and Tsubasa, will sing the opening song for the upcoming Macross Frontier television series. This project will be her first reunion with composer Yoko Kanno (Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) in several years. Sakamoto will sing "Triangler," which will appear in this latest installment of the Macross robot/romance adventure franchise. The Flying Dog label will also release the song on a CD single on April 23. The series itself will premiere in April.
Macross Frontier is set in A.D. 2059 aboard the Macross Frontier space colonization fleet. It stars Yūichi Nakamura (Mobile Suit Gundam 00's Graham, Clannad's Tomoya) as a pilot trainee named Alto Saotome, and newcomer Megumi Nakajima as a schoolgirl named Ranka Lee who dreams of becoming a singer. The two are caught in the crossfire when a mysterious enemy attacks the Macross Frontier fleet. The project features the original Macross co-creator Shōji Kawamori (Escaflowne, Aquarion) of Studio Nue and the animation studio Satelight (Macross Zero, Aquarion, Noein - to your other self).
Macross Frontier's as-yet-untitled ending song will be released on May 8 by a singer under the name "Sheryl Nome," the pseudonym based on the fictional idol singer within the story. The earlier Macross Plus and Macross 7 sequels have issued CD singles under fictional names to keep the identities of the singers a secret until the live concerts were held.

Errata: The name of Sakamoto's song corrected (should be "Triangler," not "Triangular"). Thanks, erdvilla and child of eve.
