posted on by Christopher Macdonald
15000 attendees

The SPJA has sent out a post AX press release with final numbers regarding attendance and the amount of money raised for charity.

Highlights include:
Attendance: Just under 15 000 from 44 states and 17 countries
Money Raised at the auctions: $27,500

Excerpts from the press release:

Anime Expo® had nearly 15,000 attendees accounting for nearly 40,000 attendee-days. This is a 24% increase over Anime Expo 2001 and shatters Anime Expo's® own record for any convention of its kind in the United States. Demographically, Anime Expo® had attendees from 44 different states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, indicating the nationwide popularity of Japanese animation and also establishing another record for the convention. Finally, on a global scale, Anime Expo® attendees came from 17 different countries across the world, ranging from US to Japan, from the UK to Singapore and from France to Australia. This illustrates the international popularity of Japanese animation as well as an acknowledgment of Anime Expo's® position in the international animation industry.

At Anime Expo® 2002, items donated by the industry both in America and Japan were auctioned off to the tune of $27,500, proceeds to be donated to the New York Time's 9/11 Relief fund. This money will be combined with the charity funds raised at Anime Expo® New York, to reflect a global movement of support in the anime fandom and industry for the victims of the 9/11 tragedy.
