Special Anime Programming Celebrates New Year's in Japan
posted on by Jennifer Sherman
A New Year's tradition in many households in Japan includes watching NHK's annual Kōhaku Uta Gassen (Red and White Song Battle) singing contest. Although some viewers have been tuning out in recent years, last year's program included the "Anime Kōhaku" special for anime fans. The New Year's holiday is a time many anime have special re-airings in Japan, and the Animate Times website compiled a list of this year's offerings.
Current and classic anime will re-air around New Year's, and Japanese voice actors will host special programs. Some programming will air on Japanese television networks, and most will stream online. However, foreign fans are out of luck because the streams require viewers to reside in Japan or have paid subscriptions to a streaming service.
