I think the reason for low sales numbers at other online retailers partially could be the difficulty in finding said titles. RightStuf had me waiting a month or more for Golden Cain and Kizuna 1. And it's out of their control if the merchandise isn't there to ship. And iin Waldenbooks, they may have it once, but are apparently unable to reorder said titles. If the chain stores get one volume, and can't order more, it makes it VERY difficult for sales to be good, thus justifing them not investing in the genre. It is a niche market, but so is manga in general.

Do you think there may also be some people out there that are uncomfortable admitting to purchasing a lot of yaoi and thus use the internet in order to remain anonymous???

I dunno, just a thought.

I usually use the internet vendors for titles that the major bookstores are slow in stocking.

I have high hopes in the new generation of americans, because the actual americans seem to be really conservative and close minded, specially if you compare them to the europeans. Thats why I m glad to hear that the american youth is reading yaoi manga.

I still feel bad about Bush been re-elected and the religious right getting more powerfull. Anyway, if Bush doesn't ban yaoi manga, I hope that through these artistic works people can leave behind all the prejudgements about the gay comunity.

I m not gay myself, but I think we are all equal and that all the people have the right to make their own choices. Being gay is a choice.

Congratulations to the yaoi fandom in the U.S. Here in Costa Rica the yaoi and yuri fandom is growing fast too, and I m glad to see that we are starting to change the way of seeing gay rights in our countries.

I think Ashcroft would go after Hentai/Porn and stuff that "slaps" Christianity somewhat (Chrono Crusade, Hellsing) long before they focus on anything Yaoi.

edited to add: Even so, Japan does hold a huge American Armed Forces presence, plus we do buy alot of goods from them other than Manga, so if Ashcroft does go after Manga and Anime, then Bush risks pissing off the Japanese if they get wind of such activities. He might have to rein in his resident fanatical AG than risk US Interests in Japan.

The presence of US Armed Forces in Japan is shaky with the Japanese public at best (A position that the US doesn't wanna lose given the world situation right now), plus so much Japanese culture is so ingrained into the American Pysche, whether it be a Toyota Celica being mixed with Mugen Stickers by some hick ricer, to viewing Iron Chef on a Sony Vaio, Bush would be committing political suicide if he goes after Manga and Anime.

Amazing.

The ability of the ANN forums to turn even the most apoloticial topics into ill-formed political discourse never ceases to amaze me.

No, scroll down. At the bottom of the list, it states that the titles in bold were the yaoi. Easy to miss if you have just a small window open.

Umm, getting back to the actual topic now. Anime smile

I think one small factor that boosts online sales for yaoi could be the ability of underage girls to purchase it. At a bookstore they'd probably be carded, but Amazon never asks any questions about the age of the purchaser. It's true that most teens would have to borrow credit cards from their parents, but in my experience at least, my mom never checks what I buy. I definitely have been tempted to buy a few yaoi manga with my mom's credit card, but I haven't just yet Anime catgrin

I agree however, that the biggest factor affecting yaoi manga purchases is their availability in bookstores. Neither Waldenbooks nor Suncoast was carrying Only the Ring Finger Knows last time I checked. I was disappointed, since this is really not a yaoi title (it's only 16&up), and I could have actually bought it myself. Anime cry Oh well, I guess I will end up ordering it from Amazon.

BTW, please don't mix up yaoi manga and politics. Bush isn't that evil, okay? Wink

Its called a typo. But since I'm pretty sure your post was just some sort of attempt at irony, I'm wasting my breath.
