They thought 2013 was good and this season is weak? o.o Strange, hmm. This year looks really promising in general and I found a lot of great stuff this season while 2013 seemed drab. This season we got Mushishi, Jojo, Ping Pong, Captain Earth, and I like Kawai Complex and some other stuff this season quite a bit.

Anyway, I really enjoyed hearing you two discuss your different takes on The Wind Rises. It makes me also want to see it again. Although when I saw it in theaters there were multiple people who talked loudly throughout it and laughed at inappropriate scenes... very distracting. But now I patiently await its release~ |

Here's what I recommend for Justin:
1. Ping Pong: Don't wait, just watch it now. It's freaking amazing. Seriously, just watch it now. 2. One Week Friends has suffering, so you might like it. 3. Black Bullet also is surprisingly dark. It seems like a culmination of all the tropes, but it's pretty good. Also, more suffering. |

I love Space Battleship Yamato, but it wasn't until I came upon the movie boxset at Otakon back in '05 that I really got into it. Despite my distaste for Voyager Entertainment's current (and some past) practices, I watched the everliving crap out of that set, and still go through those movies every year, usually during the summer. The video quality isn't great, and I've had to replace discs for errors, but some of the on-disc extras, the guides, the interviews, are just amazing work. You find out things about the production, the live events that surrounded the releases of the films, and the four hour long radio plays with many, if not most, of the original cast, that went on during the night during those times. Damn was that cool. I love the passion and romanticism of the Yamato series, which is somewhat lacking in 2199. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the original Japanese version of the original series to be released over here. I mean, it's not like the original Gundam TV series did well for Bandai, though they barely advertised, much as Voyager with Yamato. . I do like those last two episodes of Evangelion more with each new watch, but I still prefer EoE. I wish somebody would license rescue that. Wow, it's not often you hear a point-counterpoint debate between Zac and Justin. I mean, they've disagreed before, but this was a totally different interpretation from each of them. It's really interesting, and proof to some of the morons out there that ANN is, in fact, not a hivemind. I don't know why, but I have absolutely zero interest in Attack on Titan. The manga looks like the author just wants to draw Berserk, poorly, and the anime looks like it's just Violence Jack with less sexual sadism. Usually I'm into bloodied monster fights, but this just seems like they're just forcing it to be a "hit". FMA is a masterpiece. Gundam Unicorn lost a lot of steam because of the long release period. It's an amazing OVA. It's really what Gundam should be. But the excitement died down because people got tired of waiting several months for a new chapter. And yeah, maybe it wouldn't have been as good if the releases were closer, but it wouldn't have been stranded in the ether. Another problem is the price. I still don't have the six volumes already available and it'll probably be a long while before I get the seventh. It's well worth the price, but so are a lot of other, cheaper things of the same or similar quality. As far as anime that look cheap but draw you in, I feel that way about Baccano. Baccano seems pretty cheap at times, but it's so compelling, one of my favorite anime. You shouldn't have to read the books to watch the anime. This is the Tenchi Muyo OVA 3 argument. I don't care if there were novels that explained the Counteractor, Noike, etc. OVA 3 was still terrible. They needed to introduce those novel elements into the show naturally, and they didn't. I liked the CG Harlock movie, myself, even though the BIG TWEEST made it difficult to side with the titular character at all. And then there were all the other twists that came off a little forced. But the movie has some gorgeous CG and some great concepts that are mostly executed well. It's not a classic, but it was worth watchng. |

Anyone who tells you to skip the first two seasons of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure are telling you to skip Speedwagon, Caesar, Whammu and more importantly Stroheim. JJBA has influenced a lot of things so its really great to see what influenced later writers.

In re a director putting a gigantic period on his career: Cocteau's Testament of Orpheus. A final film by design. A bit self-indulgent (surprise, surprise, it's Cocteau), but quite a nice capper to his film work.

Oh wow, I was gonna get pretty annoyed if Justin had continued confusing Gunslinger Girl's director with the girls-with-guns-obsessed Koichi Mashimo. No, Morio Asaka has a much better body of work such as: Card Captor Sakura, the 'No Longer Human' arc of Aoi Bungaku, Chihayafuru, Chobits, and Nana. Justin did manage to correct that confusion though.
I'll be curious to see what Attack on Titan will do (if anything) when it comes on Toonami. I get the strong notion that most of the people who watch Toonami will have already seen it. I don't think there will be much crossover appeal at all (assuming that 'crossing over' refers to the consumption by not regular anime viewers). I'd be happy to be wrong though, the North American side of the industry sure could use an influx of new fans. As far as the spring season goes, my favorites are by far and away Ping Pong, Kawaisou, and The World is Still Beautiful |

As a plane guy just wanna say that I loved The Wind Rises. But the Zero wasn't a fighter it was praised not for killing but it's maneuverability at low speeds which was good for dog fighting (a dying form of air combat by WWII) it had no armor save for a plate behind the pilots seat the cockpit had no bulletproof glass you could toss a rock and shatter it. It would burst into flames when it was hit it was basically a plane that flew well that just happen to have guns on it.

As another plane guy, I have to kinda disagree with you on some points. The Zero was a fighter, it was designed as a fighter from the beginning. They designed it to be an improvement on the A5M fighter design. The maneuverability and long range that came from the lack of armor made it better at shooting down other planes. Dog fighting became less common in the Pacific theater because the Zero was so maneuverable, it forced Allied pilots to adopt different tactics to combat them. Yes it was a well designed airplane, but those design choices were made so that it would be an effective fighter aircraft. |

Yeah I agree with your points. Staying in the air longer and being maneuverable can be threatening. I bought it's portrayal in the movie as just a well designed plane. |
