I swear only Namco Bandai Games could come up with a title as nonsensical yet awesome sounding as Lord of Elemental III: Pride of Justice.

Even if it's just for 2 days of sales, 5k is a horrible opening week for The Wonderful 101.

I don't think Kamiya minds too much, he generally doesn't care as long as people enjoy his work
Quote: | "For American gamers, games that sell and don’t sell tend to be a hot topic [as opposed to Japanese gamers]… I wonder why they care so much about sales that it makes them choose what to play? It may be because sales numbers are the most obvious way to evaluate a game, and reviews seem to be another…I think that rather than borrowing some numbers to judge the quality of a game, you should decide by yourself like Japanese games do. You gotta be you; there's only one in the world ." - Hideki Kamiya |
A man wise beyond his years that a lot of gamers could learn from.

It must be nice to live under an umbrella where you don't have to worry about if your game sells at all. I have a brother in the video game industry, and whether or not he keeps his job rests on the success of the games he helps to create. This is his 3rd studio he's working at now for the past 6-8 months after getting by on light contract work for a couple of years, as he was laid off from his two previous workplaces at video game studios.
That quote is insulting, as if knows nothing of reality for 99% of game developers.

It might be true for his environment. J-games tend to have smaller budgets so they can probably have more wiggle room. Seems like a lot of games in the states can sell millions but still be considered a flop due to their production and marketing budgets. I wonder what the next generation will bring when games get even more expensive to make with the new, advanced graphics.
But I think he was more talking about the fanboys who care about game sales and critic scores being a measure of a game Japanese side of the industry doesn't put as much stock into that stuff as the American side does it seems. Metacritic ain't much in the way of Japan.

Yep not like Kamyia has to fear having his studio close down because his games under perform. That's never happen before.
Anyway, it's pretty simple why people are concerned with sales, it's um because we'd actually like Platinum to stick around and continue making games. We'd actually like console(or PC) development continue and not have say Japanese games solely exist on handhelds or some mobile games ghetto.
I doubt anyone decides what games to play based on sales.

I don't think Kamiya cares, since his money's not on the line. When this games craters, it's on Nintendo's hands. All Platinum needs to do is Announce Rising 2, and it's business as usual.

It happens all the time here and I think you've done it yourself in a few topics. People love using sales numbers as an e-peen waving contest on 'Haha my game sold more, that makes it better' or they use critic score to say how it's a better game or more revolutionary and deserving of praise..

People like Toriyama listened to criticisms mainly from the US(since FF-XIII's reception in Japan is a lot less cold) on FF-XIII and worked to make a game that was better than it, since Toriyama admitted he was making a game for both audiences.
The creators of Resident Evil 6 listened when people criticized their game and now they're working to make 7 better than 6, even though I personally liked 6. People bashed 6, because it was a shooter, even though the gameplay was good and the controls were decent.

Rising 2 probably won't be made by Kamiya and if these games keep on bombing, who else is going to want to work with them?
Bayo 2 is on WiiU because after their 5 game contract Sega wasn't interested. So now Nintendo's funding these 2 games, when they bomb and Nintendo decides not to work with them again, what then? I mean I guess if Grasshopper can somehow survive, I guess they can as well. But I'd like Platinum to be more than a MGS Rising or really cheap looking game factory. And who even know's if Konami wants another Rising or Platinum can live off just that Plenty of Japanese development houses have fallen because of similar trajectory. Game Republic anyone?
Maybe Kamyia dosen't care, but I care. I kind of want the dude to keep making whatever the heck he wants and so I hope he finds a way to do it.

Well go ahead, find a thread where I said "I want to play this game because of the sales" or anyone else saying this.

Well I'd love to see some actual examples that are exactly as you say they are.

What are you talking about? This is a terrible thing. How dare they try and get a bigger worldview of their fan's opinions.

As long as the game is profitable it will be fine; we don't know how much it costed to make and advertise and I think it will keep selling a bit in the following months (not much though; it's a niche kind of game after all).

I am not very surprised Kamiya finds the views odd. American culture is very different from Japanese culture when it comes to media. American culture is very obsessed with reviews, numbers, and opinions. I imagine it stems from the cultural stereotype that America is a very extroverted culture, and extroverts are generally the only people who would think anyone would care about their opinions about something. People also seek validation of their choices through others, so the more people who agree with them, either in reviews or sales, the more reassurance they feel in their own enjoyment of something. It is why you can see tons of positive reviews for a game, but when you see one review which rated it poorly or only decent, fanboys tend to gang up and focus on that one review and blow it up out of proportion. That one review is far more important to them than the dozens of positive ones because the notion of seeing someone not enjoying it threatens their own stance on it. Rather than talk up all the positive reviews, they talk down about the negative one. Japan is generally above those notions, and you would be hard pressed to find as many media outlets dedicated to very opinionated reviews on things; where as here all you need to do is visit YouTube to see an amateur vlogger ranting their thoughts about a game or movie.

I find it odd such a country that encourages land of freedom and individuality, so forth and yada yada yada, they seem more like hivemind than any other countries. Yet they have galls to criticise the other countries for it, [expletive] hilarious.
