Shirow's recent art may be straddling the lines of good taste these days, but this is news all the same. I never figured Dark Horse would license another Shirow artbook.
I really hope it does well: I just love artbooks, and I'd love to see more of them in the U.S.--a veritable wave of the stuff, inundating my shelves~! (Meanwhile, I save my pennies...) |

The guy does full on hentai these days, so there's definitely no straddling. I'd like to see some of those collections get licensed. |

He's been doing it for a while too, more than a decade now. For example, his Galgrease anthologies from 2002. He continues Galgrease now with the W Tails including CG works (see Extra Stage and DMM links; nsfw obviously) The only difference is that back then when he was only known for Appleseed, GITS, etc (at least in the West), he had more on his hands from those mainstream productions. It seemed like he always wanted do this though, and we already saw some glimpses of his erotic prediliction in GITS, leading to the infamous Dark Horse censoring saga. But now that he's already established, has licensing money coming in from those mainstream works, he can really let loose |

I dunno; making complex, deeply researched SF manga seems an odd way to break into the hentai biz to me. Sort of like busting your tail to climb the corporate ladder so you can realize your dream of working at a gas station. Sigh, missing the old Shirow... |

I'm not saying he did his previous SF works just to get into hentai. In fact I think he did all of his SF work with genuine interest. But erotica and SF are not mutually exclusive! It's very much possible to be interested in both. Like I said, his fondness for pretty girls was clear very early on--it was also part of the old Shirow. This is very similar to how many mainstream artists also create ero-doujinshi on the side as their hobby, without many people realizing it. As far as your analogy goes, it really doesn't fit. It's more like climbing the corporate ladder to build enough capital, to retire early to live comfortably off of interest, dividends and capital gains alone from all the previous hard work so that you can realize your dream of traveling the world, doing whatever you want, being a surfer bum, getting hookers, or making whatever art you want without having to worry about selling enough to keep you off the streets, etc |

You mean the guy who treated Motoko's vacuum-sealed latex catsuits as Casual Friday, and pitted tank police against stripper catgirls? Shirow's always had a sincere fascination with cyber-punk Science Fiction (and the results of that have been pretty awesome), but he's never been shy about drawing pretty girls in ridiculous outfits - or a lack thereof - either. GITS never needed the blatant sexuality, it's just within the fabric of Shirow's fetishism, same with the convoluted tank designs and unique use of graphics software in tandem with traditional 2D art (back when that wasn't totally normal, I mean). Mainstream work makes a lot more money than pr0n. If Shirow's still making Galgrease and Intron Depot, it's because that's what he really wants to do. Personally, I like his greasy gals just fine, so I'm not gonna complain. |

Shirow's artistic taste has been easy to see for a long time now. What I miss is Shirow the writer. I suppose the art work is easier and more fun though.

It's been awhile since I've collected anything Shirow. He's still my main man but I think I enjoy is comic art more than his illustrations. I think it's mainly due to so much of the computer colorization patterns that he uses. It does get the job done, but sometimes it seems too much of a shortcut or sheer laziness. But I still love him till the day I die. Maybe I'll pick this book up.

Good he least making some making art books. I do agree I miss Shirow of the past, wishing he do something with GITS than let other people do it and seeing Dominion Tank Police get another story arc. I sorely miss his writing/sense of humor and his artistic styles. His X-ray stuff is nice, but i can only take it in small doses.

FYI if anyone's interested, I noticed J-List already carries the imported Intron Depot 5 and some of his other works like PIECES 8 ~ Wild Wet West, which is continues the Galgrease franchise he started back in 2002. And recently they have a very nice, but pricey Cyril 1/6 Cast off Figure ~ Masamune Shirow PIECES 2 for preorder |
