I don't know anything about Gundam, but:
Cherno Alpha was modeled after Zack
Cherno Alpha was inspired by Zeon Army
There was another Jaeger that resembles another robot in Gundam
so I guess he's a fan?

The entire reason he made the film is because the dude loves robots and monsters.

Quote: | Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro took a family vacation to Japan's man-made Odaiba island with his daughter-in-law Rinko and grand daughter Mana. |
The only way this makes sense is if it's a cutesy way of saying del Toro, Rinko Kikuchi, and Mana Ashida are close. Rinko Kikuchi plays adult Mako Mori in the film and Mana Ashida plays child Mako. None of them are related, as this article seems to imply.

I was about to comment about this as well. Did the author of this article watch Pacific Rim or did research about the people who were in this movie?
Rinko Kikuchi and Mana Ashida are not Director del Toro's family. They're the actresses who respectively play the movie's older and younger main female character Mako Mori.

It was a dumb mistake on my part based on the video's description on YouTube. The last names weren't included, and while I've seen the movie, it didn't click with me immediately.
Don't mind me, I'll be over here in the corner.

1) Modeled after a "zaku" from the Zeon Army.
2) Modeled after the Gun Cannon model, I believe. I don't remember a ton from the older Gundams, but that's what it looks like.

It's likely the Zaku, though there are Zeon mobile suits that use the inconsistent romanization Zack rather than Zaku, like the Hizack and the EWAC Zack "Eye-Zack".

When I watched the movie I remember the Chinese Jaeger, Crimson Typhoon, looked a lot like a char version of a zeon mobile suit. It has 1 "eye" and it was red.

Last I heard it was doing so well overseas that we might get a sequel.

It's Zaku, ANN. Zack is an old translation of the said Mobile Suit. Here's an image coming from the HG line of Gunpla.

It's doing stupendous overseas. China and Japan will be the biggest money-makers.
And they've already green-lit a sequel. So yeah, I think that constitutes as "successful."

Maybe US citizens can atone by buying the disc release in droves, otherwise I think it would make better financial sense to make a sequel where the main roles go to asian actors and not expend loads on money in advertisement stateside.
