Yeah, Lupin music is massively underrated. Personally, I like it more than Bebop's...though it's a toss-up between The Real Folk Blues and Love Squall.

Heh, my Lupin CD goes on just about every time I go into my room... although it helps that it's one of the only CDs I own. ^-^;;

It was given to me, otherwise I probably wouldn't have it, but boy I'm glad I do. I love it.

As far as the con planning section in concerned, it is very good strategy which I followed at the last two cons I attended. Discovered some new anime I want to watch now as well as going to the events I wanted to go to. Didn't leave much time to eat however. Smile

"Take the synth-heavy tones of the utterly pathetic Mortal Kombat soundtrack"

Pathetic?! Sir, I take serious offense to this! If my 13-year old self could travel through time, he'd come and kick your ass! The Mortal Kombat theme is timeless. And who could forget Orbital's 'Halcyon and on and on', a trance tune also used in the unforgettable classic HACKERS?

Seriously though, I know it's cheesy, but I know a lot of people who loved the Mortal Kombat soundtrack and still do. It's like calling He-Man utterly pathetic. We know it wasn't "good", but we still love it.

Love it all you want, but the fact remains that Mortal Kombat music is wretched--and RBHS music is beyond wretched. ^_^

So do you think all electronic music is wretched?

Nah, I'm an equal opportunity music basher. For positive reviews of electronic music, see JPOP CD, Yoko Ishida, Mahoromatic, and Lain Cyberia. In fact, I think I've been harsher on the classical stuff...

JPOP is not ELECTRONIC MUSIC, It's JPOP, Jon. Go look up Electronica and then come back.

Bah, you're right. I have zero Electronica background. Sorry about the mislabeling.

How can you review music when you don't know the difference between electronic music and J-pop? The comparison is an insult to all of electronic music enthusiasts. or is it that you only know anime music?

Because the genres don't matter.

*Soapbox*

I don't like relying on some "genre" label in the music; it's a poor oversimplification of the sound. Genres are useful when you're trying to categorize a bunch of CDs in a retail store or an encyclopedia, but they do nothing to determine whether or not the music's any good--the goal of my column. I don't care about the genre; I care about the pitch, the tone color, the dynamics, and the duration of a piece. That should cover just about anything. If you use genres to determine whether or not a particular piece of music will appeal to you, I encourage you to expand your horizons and look for the similarities in all music. You'll find a lot more music to enjoy.

Knowing that Yoko Ishida should be considered "JPOP" instead of "Electronica" has zero bearing on how I feel about the music. I hope I do a good enough job using 150-200 words to describe the music and whether or not I think it's any good. I don't need genres to do that.

Genres do not matter. Good music is good music; poor music is poor music. It's that simple.

Orbital's Halcyon and on and on remains one of my favorite pieces of music to this day. While Utah Saint's Mortal Kombat theme was one of my favorite Techno Dance tunes of the time, I can't look back in all honesty and say the music was song was "good."

It's was a great energy song, a great song for the big 5000 person dance floors. Hell I still get pumped listening to that song today.

As for the rest of the MK soundtrack.... forgetable.

As for the RBHS music, personally I found it very amusing in the show, it was straight from a street fighter or MK style game. Being a huge fan of those games, and the show being, to a degree, a parody of them, I thought the music was great. But on it's own, as a CD, I couldn't agree with Jonathan more, wretched.
