There's already a live-action Kite. It's called Le Femme Nikita.

So this live-action version won't use angsty teens?

Anyway, hopefully, Cohen will do a better job adapting Kite than he did Macross Plus, I mean Stealth. Thoughts, Carl?

So will they leave the underage sex?

...blech. Kite left a bad taste in my mouth when I saw it; the live action version will require massive changes.

Anyone want to play the "odds it will be made" game yet?

I say, it's just been announced with producers and, more importantly, directors named, though they don't really mention if it's been greenlit by an actual studio, or if this is just a project driven by creative guys in search of a studio (and I don't know if Sony is exactly chomping at the bit for Cohen to handle anything else for them in the near future since both XXX: State of the Union and Stealth were expensive and high-profile box-office stiffs, though I actually enjoyed Stealth for what it was, brainless late-summer action fluff that really wasn't much like Macross Plus at all, save for a vague influence in the design of the planes and sci-fi cliché A.I. gone haywire).

It's not exactly a well-known franchise in North America, even within the anime fandom niche (at least of those that weren't in the fandom circa 1999), but, in this case, lack of awareness could work in live-action Kite's favor (since very few people would have much of any expectations for the producers to live up to, unlike the stalled-in-early-development live-action DBZ and live-action Evangelion, which still doesn't have a studio backing it), and, assuming they'll use La Femme Nikita as a general guideline for how to shoot this film, it shouldn't be that expensive, relatively-speaking, to shoot "properly".

I'd say the odds that this will get out of "development" and into at least "preproduction" are even-split, for now.

The only other live-action film that could get made soon, assuming GeraLd Molen isn't affected by the Dreamworks buy-out, is Lupin. Of course if Ratner screws up X3, I wouldn't be surprised if FOX decides to greenlight DBZ.

I haven't heard any news on live-action Lupin in two years, and none of the news back then even seemed all that solid.

Reading the plot again, I realize that this is basically the same angle as the Wachowskis' V for Vendetta, except without the politics.

Isn't that just swell. Kite was the first and only (not lying) "adults only" (thought it was 17+ though...) title I ever bought. Either way, must say I was let down. Live action can not help it. Instead choose something cooler to see like Perfect Blue!
