The e-mail list is currently their most valuable asset, and it will be sold. Probably to someone trying to hawk merchandise or spammers. |

No, it's not. While a business will often cite it will not sell personal information, many sell "anonymous" data, such as number of daily hits, etc. It's a very lucrative business. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as anonymous data. Anyone with the resources can easily match this information up to other sources, which is why it's very lucrative. However, don't worry about it. It's not like your CC data is being sold, just what you bought with it. Most companies use this information to sell other companies products and services, and rarely does this come back to the consumer (though in some cases, it's apparent when the mailbox or inbox are suddenly filled with "special offers"). Read the Terms of Service carefully, despite their bullshit attempt at making them incomprehensible. If you don't understand it, do not sign up until you ask questions. Otherwise, you've no one to blame but yourself. Even ANN has the right to sell your data: "We regularly share statistical data with 3rd parties and the public." Sorry, but that's just the way it is. |

Got to stay classy until the very end right Borders? Frankly, I am quite outraged that Borders would do sell customer information even though they are going out of business.
I know this happens daily, but seriously, if the company is about to go entirely out of business, the least they could do is delete the information rather than sell it. Not cool Borders, not cool at all. |

Most things like a sale of personal information is usually in the fine print of a rewards/discount program either in its brochure or online. For example, here's the one for B&N:
I'm not throwing this out there to high-five Borders, but just to encourage folks to always read the fine print, or ask WHERE they can read it before signing on the dotted line. I remember this happened to a local tailor of mine that went out of business. He sold his customer information to a business that was replacing his in the same location. I didn't know it had happened, until I went there a few years ago to buy a new suit. |

Depending on what state you're in, they may or may not be able to sell your personal information to someone else, may require notification, or may require consent.
Selling lists of email addresses with no other information is actually done all the time by lots of businesses. Email addresses themselves aren't really private, even if it does include your full name. Although, seriously, what fool would go online with that kind of email address? So more than likely, if you ever used that email address before to sign up for something else, it's already been sold in a batch with a million others. On the other hand, the buyer is probably going to be either Amazon or Barnes & Noble, and most former Borders shoppers are probably already on those lists! |
