It's popular for being basically a twist on the usual magical girl genre. Much in the same light that Evangelion put a new twist on the mecha genre. And semi-related to how Magical Lyrical Nanoha took a very typical magical girl start, and by S2 and S3 of that show was off on a very far tangent. (Although Nanoha is successful as a franchise, it's nowhere near the popularity of the first two)

If I had to make a Western comparison, it would be like putting together a plot that was magical girl + the sort of grimdark you might find in Batman or Spiderman comics.

It's a Faustian interpretation of the magical girl genre.

Oh, man, can't believe you didn't add Bokurano and Evangelion to that, but okay.

Basically, this is the result of every Japanese fan of magical girls coming together.

ufufufu =v= same.

But honestly if you break it down it really is worth it, since it comes with a Drama CD / Character Song, and the packaging is really awesome~ And the Next BlueRay we should start getting the sound track which I'm drooling over.

Wow! First time I've seen a magical girl get this much love!
NOT the first time I've seen such love being directed so undeservedly(Clannad *wink* *wink*).

Here's two words for ya: Princess. Tutu.

This might be a stupid question but... does Madoka Magica blu rays have english subtitles?

I am thinking about buying this, even though it's expensive as hell. Seriously, if I calculated correctly, I would pay certain amount of money that nobody sane would ever spend on... well, cartoon. At least not in my country. But it's pointless to buy it if I can't understand it, so I would like to know if there are subtitles.

I am glad to see Madoka doing so well in sales. SHAFT deserves it.

What really impresses me about these sales is that Madoka was an original story, not an adaptation. It didn't already have a huge established fanbase (like say, Bakemonogatari) and even with some audio glitches (with some stores sending their copies back for a recall) the first BD vol has the highest first week BD units sold for television anime. That's just... amazing.

I think it's funny how there isn't any middle of the road for SHAFT. It's either barely treading water (Arakawa, Soredemo, Natsu no Arashi, etc) or it has record sales (Bakemonogatari and PMMM). They either strike out or hit it big it seems.

no English sub title for this one as far as i can see.

Nanoha season 1 and 2 were just as popular as Madoka at that time.
Nanoha The MOVIE 1st sold 58,000 bluray, first week.

Afaik no, they don't come with English subtitles. People are just buying it to support a show they really love. Buy it and keep English subbed copies of the BRD rips that will undoubtedly surface online IMHO.

Or hardmode: rip the English subs from a fansub and re-author the BRD disk with the subtitles on the disk.

It may also be possible to just keep the scripts, and if playing off a computer BRD player, to just load the subtitles while the video is going, but I'm not sure.

PS: Nanoha A's sold 12k copies per vol, so a success but nowhere near Madoka levels.
