The bad news about something like The World God Only Knows is that, now that we have a self-referential spoof on dating sims and harem storylines, it can never be done again—anyone else who tries to poke fun at the artifice of romance games versus reality is just going to look unoriginal.

Even worse news: Since when did THAT ever stop anyone? If this show becomes even remotely successful (I don't know if it is -- haven't checked, don't care enough to check) expect a whole lot of animation companies to try.

The World God Only Knows turned into a disappointment for me. I loved the first eppie, but as far as I'm concerned the show never returned to that height. It was intermittently amusing, but you could feel the strain of stretching story material in most of the arcs. Still, it was a decent enough show that I will catch the second season, but mostly for the cutie Elsee and Keima's hot, ex-motorcycle mama, mama.

I liked the first episodes with the athletic girl because they were simple and even though they were goofy they were fairly realistic. Kanon's episodes were terrible, I couldn't justify her desire to be liked by everyone no matter how hard I tried. Someone texted during your concert, uh oh better go cry now. Not that he has a life of his own and can't just be worshipping you all the time. Rolling Eyes

Carlo says he believes that episodes five, six and seven are the best of the lot. I wonder how many people would agree with him? Personally, I would consider those the worst of the bunch. Partly because they took one and-a-half episodes worth of story and stretched it out to a mind-numbing three episodes, but also due to poor execution. Which is a shame, because the execution acquitted itself fairly well in the other arcs (yes, even the fourth one which was also waaay too long).

The show had a lot of potential, however after the very strong first three episodes it just squandered it. Funny how the two shorter arcs were better than the two longer arcs; when the writing was tight the show had direction and purpose and had emotional impact. The Kanon arc, besides being utterly boring, was poorly written and confusing. There were problems (as in, plot holes) with Keima's approach, and despite him saying "I can see the ending" he never seemed to have any plan whatsoever.

As for the filler/side episodes; the first was funny ode to badly-written games (although what game would only have one heroine?); the second played with multiple perspectives and threads quite well; and the third episode was awesome in its own way, even if it wasn't the best finale.

The show was watchable, but I mourn the wasted potential. With superior writing it could have been significantly better.

So this is like a dream within a dream.

Because while he has to now use his skills...

... It's still stereotypical anime cliches, not real life.

I mean, there's not too much difference between eroge and anime, is there? Laughing

Not I. Here's how I rank them:

Best: Athletic Girl (not even an arc, actually)
Next: Poor Little Rich Girl
Distant Third: Book Girl
Unspeakable: Kanon

My favorite part of the show had to be,

"The black ships! Look! It's a ship! And it's black!"

followed by,

"A red fire engine! Look! It's a fire engine! And it's red!"

The mere premise of this show disgusts me.

But the only game with any sort of romantic options that I enjoyed was Mass Effect, so yeah.

That's the same as how I would put them. As much as I thought Shiori (A.K.A. book girl) was incredibly cute - damn you, Moe feelings - her arc went on for at least an episode too long. Cuteness can smooth over the cracks but it can't fill them. If it could, I would have rated Nurarihyon no Mago two rating grades higher than I actually did, just because it had Yuki-Onna. Ahhh, my lovely Yuki-Onna . . . *drools*

The reasons why I rate Ayumi's arc better than Mio's are A: it was half as long but did everything that Mio's arc did and just as well, and B: it even worked in the responsibility of introducing the characters and setup the premise. I now see that the first episode was a fluke of exceptional writing, but at the time I thought it was a sign of things to come.

I thought that the anime did not do justice to the source material - it stretched out a lot of things, had little to no good segues (HI, I'M A ROLLING ELSIE FACE, NEXT GAG!) and went in to SD too much.

Kanon's pink hair ruined the Ranka illusion for me (you can tell a lot of these heroines are based on actual anime/manga/eroge heroines) and her arc was stretched so much with just the actual SINGING that I didn't really expect much more of the anime and stopped until it was over.

I think the color scheme could be toned down a little bit, too...

I love TWGOK, but oh how I would've done things differently if I had a hand in this.

(holy run-on sentences batman!)

I'm glad the reviewer enjoyed the anime very much. Hopefully, when the 2nd season comes, he might enjoy it too.

This show was tied (w/ Oreimo) for runner-up of the Fall season. (The best being Otome Yokai Zakuro)

The "filler" episodes dragged the show more then any of the episodes involving the girls, IMO. Though I would have taken an episode from Kanon and given it to Mio; as Shiori and Mio were my favorite girls.
