What do you mean that the second season is a bunch of filler barely worth mentioning?
That one episode with Mami Honda's rampaging robot guard dog was completely essential to the integrity of the narrative. Even if it bore not even a passing resemblance to anything that ever happened in Mihona Fujii's original Gals! manga upon which the series is based. Fie, I say, fie! *shakes fist* |

And so ANN trashes yet another excellent series. I had never put much credence in people's accusations that the ANN reviewers were living in an ivory tower where every anime has to be a deep, life-altering, genre-redefining work of art, but seriously...writing off the entire second season as garbage because it's just plain good fun without big impactful "messages"? Really?
Super Gals - like all anime - is entertainment, not a training video for real life, and it should not be judged by its utility as such. |

Can I ask exactly what is it with all the hypersensitivity lately about reviews? How can you actually read that text - and even look at the grades the show got from Bamboo - and say that "ANN has trashed another series"?
Actually Bamboo specifically placed that right in context and said she found the second season disappointing compared to the first, which set up some loftier goals for the show, and that the second season - by comparison, and remember this is a review of the entire series box set - was a letdown. Nobody said the show "had" to be deep or have meaningful messages at all. That is a total misrepresentation of what was said, and I'm really getting sick and tired of people bitching about reviews where I have to question whether or not you actually read the review or paid any attention to what she was saying at all.
Yeah, and she didn't think the second season lived up to the first one, nor was it very entertaining. This is all extremely obvious in the text of the review itself. |

I obviously did read it, and my sense from reading it was that the show was being primarily weighed (and found lacking) on its ability to convey useful life-enriching messages to the audience it was intended for, rather than its entertainment value.
I understand if you don't see the review as having that tenor, but that was and is my impression of it. That opinion appears to be troubling to you, which is unfortunate, but I'm afraid I can't apologize for forming it. |

You're entitled to your opinion, and nobody asked you to apologize for it. I respond to what I feel are over-the-top reactions and unfair blanket statements about the entire editorial content on this site (for instance, "you're all a bunch of ivory tower elitists because I found this show entertaining and you didn't"). |

It's fortunate that that wasn't my argument, then. I can quite understand not appreciating Super Gals for its inability to entertain. However, not appreciating it for its inability to serve as a purveyor of advice on sensible living is another matter. |

Wait, this show gets an A rating and somehow is being "trashed"?
Alrighty then.... |

Yeahhh, I was wondering about that too. Seems like someone only read part of the review... |

Seems like someone only read part of my comments...
"Trashes" was a poor choice of words, I admit. You can substitute "disserves" or "incommodes" if you like. Perhaps by doing so you can move past that and attend to the rest of my remarks. As I've already said, I obviously did read the entire review and found its overall tone to be skewed toward a judgment based on providing "messages", to the point of completely dismissing the entire latter half of the franchise. As I've also already said, that is merely a statement of how it happened to strike me as a whole, and I quite understand if others don't come away from it with the same impression. Now, as I didn't intend the expression of my opinion to derail the entire thread, perhaps we can end the focus on it here. |

Ah Super GALS!...my first shoujo (if you can call it that). This show is near and dear to my heart. ♥
I can understand where the reviewer is coming from though, saying the second season is nothing but filler. I never really realized it, but it kinda is. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed it. *goes to watch the DVDs* X3 |

Hey Zac, if you're still reading this thread, I notice that this is the second review from Bamboo to be posted recently. Is this going to be a regular occurance now, or are these two reviews just an exception?

Nonetheless, there were a few moments of plot progression and character advancement in the second half, like with Miyu and Yamato's relationship, Mami Honda becoming somewhat sympathetic, and 2nd-place actually getting a girlfriend. And the spotlight episode on Ran's random school friend Rie was a real treat. But yeah, there was a definite sense of drag, and the Aya/Rei relationship was a real wall-banger. I took the second half on vacation to rewatch, since I knew I'd need to sit down and plow through it without the distractions of home and the Internet to get in the way. I can say that without a dub for variety, there's no way I'm going back to it a 3rd time. |
