This is breaking news just coming in as I type this, emanating from the Twitter account of GAINAX's Yasuhiro Takeda, but it appears that the renowned and much-admired anime director Satoshi Kon passed away today at the age of 47.

That sucks. Sad

Man I hope this isn't real, he's one of my favorite anime directors. His films are so realistic

Truly an unfortunate loss to the anime community. As a pioneer and leader in psychological anime, he will surely be missed. My sympathies go out to his family and friends.

At least he will be remembered through his works.

Yasuhiro Takeda posted on his Twitter that Kon apparently died from cancer.

Oh no. A friend just texted me about this. This is horrible news. It's still breaking... so there's hopefully some chance that it's false... but... it's a rare and awful fluke that such news turns out false after such reports.

Forget just the anime film community, this is a sad day for cinema in general. The man has been a visionary genius for film period.

Today is a sad day for the animes.

Kon only made 5 animes. However, each of them is a solid proof
of his great talent. His passing away easily became the biggest
tragedy for the anime in this decade.

Hope him rest in peace.

He died way too soon. RIP.

I wonder what will happen with Yume-Miru Kikai now.

A very sad day. Satoshi Kon was one my favorite directors. I loved Millennium actress and Tokyo Godfathers. I think he could have made many more movies and series. He will truly be missed.

This is terrible, terrible news. He was very young (47) still and had a many more amazing visions he had.

A terrible loss for the film/anime world. You'll be missed Satoshi. Crying or Very sad

Paranoia Agent is one of my most beloved anime series.

He was my favorite director and helped re-ignite my interest in anime when I really didn't care much for it anymore. He will be sorely, sorely missed.

How sad. The man was a giant, and a visionary....Paprika is one of the most wonderfully inventive films I have ever had the pleasure of seeing, anime or otherwise. He'll be missed.
