Anime Expo's the one that hired that CEO right? If it's the one I'm thinking of Zac and Justin tore him a new one the ANNCast they mentioned it; I wonder if he's to blame again?

Why do I have a sneaking suspicion that this is only the first of a long list of complaints we will hear about the show this year?

Considering this has occurred, I am not going to be surprised if there are more complaints.

Less merchandise to choose from means less of a reason to continue to attend AX. I'm going this year, but honestly, if it wasn't for ANNCast, I may have just skipped it and been satisfied with Fanime. Tacking on a cost/making rules after the final deadline is just shady.

I don't think the carting fee increase is going impact the overhead of many of the vendors. I'd imagine very few vendors actually used the existing carting service, choosing to hand carry most of the merchandise.

the bigger groups like Sasuga (sp?) and such that bring in books and the other much larger retailers are going to be screwed though. Buyers will be paying more than the already overly ridiculous prices for merchandise.

Jeez, I hope other conventions don't look at this and go "Durrr, that's a great idea!" and I really hope Anime Expo changes it back because enforcing it after the deadline is just slimy. I'm not going to Anime Expo because I live nowhere near it, but imagine this happening to any convention pisses me off.

Agreed. If they feel they have to up these costs, I guess that's their choice and they can live with the consequences if people decide it's not worth their while to come. However, doing it after people are committed to coming is really dirty.

I suppose one advantage of a small con like the one I go to is that the vendors' inventory is small enough and close enough that they can just move it themselves without much trouble.

well I wish I could go this year, but I had a school funded competition last week in kansas city, MO, so no anime convention in LA for me,
but if you want to buy something good, you better be first in line, and go right to what you want and buy, I hesitated at megacon this year, and was only able to get one PVC figure I really wanted, the rest were cheaper crane prize versions nobody wanted, from now on I will just preorder it and import it from japan...

Damn, I hope the booths I normally dash at on Day 1 won't suffer too much of a hit because of this.
I guess on the other hand, the top priority items I want at AX are most likely the merchandise that the vendors will carry because they'll sell quickly.

Vendors are not allowed to hand carry in their merchandise. They would have to pay standard dreyage.

Most people get kicked out of the dealer hall during setup/teardown times, I know, but it might surprise you how a booth that doesn't look very big can expand into so many boxes. This would be especially taxing on the larger booths and anyone with lots of books/discs (heavy boxes) or lots of bulky stuff (figures, for example, that don't weigh a lot but tend to have huge packaging and fill boxes quickly). Which comprises a lot of dealer hall selection, from my experience.

Really? How does this work? I'm curious because I've got a friend who helps run a booth at larger cons and when I'm at a con they're at, I've always hung around before/after dealer hall hours to help set up and tear down and I've gotten free stuff in return. We hand-carried some stuff back to their vechicles afterwards, but even with that they may have been paying some fees that I wasn't aware of for simply having the stuff in the hall. Though now that I think about it, Otakon08 was the last time I was at a con with them and I can't remember how much of it we loaded up into their van ourselves.

I've never been to a convention, but why would they have to pay?
I'm guessing there's probably some liability, but I would think a few pounds dropped on someone's toes may hurt just a little less than a few hundred pound cart getting out of control.

This is pretty disappointing news. Over the last couple of years AX has become the one con I truly look forward to but the long list of complaints and changes to this year's event has really put a bad taste in my mouth regarding the show.
Typically, I don't do a lot of shopping at the show but I always enjoy checking out the vendors' wares and buying a few impulse items that catch my eye. Hopefully IDG will be able to to resolve this issue before Thursday.
