Pity the Otaku Elimination Contest died. I'm tired of US fans using "otaku" when they really mean "fan." Plus, if fans knew what "otaku" really meant, I wonder how many would still want to be one.
Tokyopop's blatant marketing campaign should be good for a few laughs though (curious what comments they would receive if their videos were posted to NicoNico). Well, I can't really blame Tokyopop, like DannyChoo, for trying to sell "the experience" if there's a market. |

This is going to be hilarious in a schadenfreude kind of way, except the people involved don't realize there's any schaden.

^ My thoughts exactly. Thinking about the kind of people one usually sees on reality t.v., I can just imagine what kind of things will come out on this. "I've got Unit 01 tattooed across my chest!"; "I got plastic surgery to look like Faye!"

Fun fact: The producers were originally going to call this, "The Biggest Loser," but it turned out that title was already taken.

Stu Levy needs a new hobby that does not involve Japanese pop culture. His pet projects that he forces on consumers never fail to be utterly idiotic (lol DJ Milky, the terrible Courtney Love manga, etc.).

I thought them still trying to push the Priest movie was bad, but this is just a wall-banger.
I wanted to like Tokyopop. I really, really do. They've licensed some of my favorite manga titles, and it seemed like they were improving since the more recent trouble they had. But honestly I couldn't care less if they wind up driving themselves into the ground at this point. |

I seriously lol'd when I read this. My gosh, someone must be hurting for money. But, I must admit I'm intested in seeing this trainwreak, could be fun.

Exactly what I was thinking, though I don't think I could have phrased it so perfectly. What I am wondering is how this is supposed to draw in more fans for manga and/or anime. |

This. Question: It's pretty well-known that Tokyopop is or hasn't been in the healthiest state. If this utterly fails, which, let's face it, the chances are pretty high, won't this just mean more wasted costs? Or are they just desperate or in a false state of security? Recessions mean budgeting and focus. I don't see Yen Press or Del Rey or VIZ running out to make a reality show focused on finding some crazy, rabid, obsessed "otaku". And they're the ones with decent release schedules who (usually) aren't indefinitely pulling or canceling titles. And their releases still have some sense of quality with minimal spelling and grammatical errors. Really, is there a good reason for this? |

I really can't say the Japanese have any better grasp on English after the "Dandy" stuff in the last Fairy Tail published here. I say the Japanese have as bad or even more fragile grasp on the meaning of foreign words
We know. We know. We know. We've heard it a million times. You do know Americans wear our "Trailer Trash" & "Redneck" titles with pride. Why the hell would we care? Otaku could mean child-raping murderers & there would be some proudly brandishing the title.
Reality shows are cheap to make & popular on tv? desperate attempt at staying alive? |

That's true, though I'm still iffy. It's all assuming people will be interested in this sort of thing. Maybe to watch brainless people (I'm assuming those are the ones that are going to be on the show--people with a few hundred DVDs or manga volumes and cosplay at a few cons pale in comparison to some people out there). But, do we know it'll be on TV? It would bring in more income, but this entire premise could/will turn out very niche with a low-budget feel. Good luck to Tokyopop on this, if it can bring about better quality and some stability...But hopefully they know what they're doing, or else this could make the situation even worse. |

ZOMG!!!1 I hope they come to Virginia so I can show them how kawaii I am with my mega huge anime collection and thousands of pokemon cards. IDEA! I should let them hear my super cool singing voice by singing all the theme songs in order. I should also do the Sailor Moon, One Piece and Cardcaptor Sakura theme songs since I know them by heart as well. OH GOSH! Maybe I should go get a couple Gundam tattoos too so I'm assured an entry.
I'm so totally excited for this. I hope I get to go on so I show all the losers not into anime just how cool otaku are. Don't worry fellow otaku, I'll paint us in a cool light. |
