At 163 Minutes, it should be fairly obvious that no significant cuts were made to the original material. I guess Ill be waiting a while before I can see it, however.

Most likely because "popular" is a relative thing. They're popular with fans, but the average Japanese movie-goer isn't likely to be interested (or even aware of their existence). Limited releases are the norm for otaku oriented movies; I believe the Macross Frontier movie opened on something like 30 screens. Of the "otaku-centric" titles, only Eva seems to get a wider release. Even Eva Rebuild 2.0 was on less than 200 screens at opening. A look at the top anime movies for 2009 can be informative. |

While I agree that "popular" itself is relative, it should be obvious to see that each screen showing each anime title either sold out or was very near capacity.
I mean, honestly, 12 screens for Unlimited Blade Works Fate/Stay? That isn't near enough for all those Type Moon people. Just look at how many DVDs Kara no Kyoukai sold! I'm not expecting 100+ screens for any of those, but I thought they would all be around 40-50. |

That was the objective. To completely fill the theaters so that those movie goers eat lots and lots of food to allow the theaters to make a profit. You can't do that if there are lots of theaters showing the title. Average movie goer won't be interested in anime titles so the total amount of screens showing the title will be low. |

I assume that Haruhi fans must have rushed to cinema on the first days, and all they got left now is re-watch tickets. I'll even take the liberty, infuriate the fans, and say that this movie won't get much views up to its last days. Another day, another bet.

It's obvious now, after it was released, but we haven't managed to predict the future with absolute accuracy yet. Evidently leading up to its release, they weren't expecting quite that much demand.
I think you're right there though; Unlimited Blade Works probably deserved more than a dozen screens. |

Note that nobody actually has final weekend numbers for Haruhi. Everything is estimated based on other numbers.

Seats per day is a terrible statistic to use. Obviously as you increase the number of screens, then you're also increasing the number of seats per day. Seats per screen is much more telling. For Nanoha, 39863 views on 19 screens turns up an average of 2098 views per screen. For Fate/Stay, 24407 views for 12 screens turns up an average of 2034 views per screen. Haruhi's total number of views was not given but can be estimated by using the average ticket price of Fate/Stay and Nanoha and dividing its box office numbers by that price. Average ticket price of Fate/Stay and Nanoha is 1540 yen. Dividing the rough estimate of 100,000,000 yen by 1540 yen gives about 64889 views. Dividing that even further gives an estimate average of 2703 views per screen. So Haruhi does seem to come out ahead of the other two. Of course, this method considers that each screen has the same capacity, which simply isn't true. I would love to read your sources about capacity numbers though. I honestly don't have the slightest clue how big theatres in Japan are (though the glimpse I saw from End of Evangelion suggests they are much bigger than the one I go to). |

I apparently have more free time than Kyon does. I have found the theatre capacities and amount of showings per day. I used the 1800 yen standard admission ticket as my average ticket price and came up with the average showing was 64.5% full. Here's my calculations (note, I didn't use any extra seats or include the possibilty of people in standing room only in my calculations for ease of comparison between showings) :

United Cinemas Toyosu - 413 seats (+2 Extra) - 6 showings (Max 2,478) 6. Cinema Two - 396 seats (+4 Extra) - 5 showings (Max 1,980) 7. Warner MyCal Cinemas Minato Mirai - 248 seats - 4 showings (Max 992) 8. Kawasaki Cinecitta 532 seats - 5 showings (Max 2,660) 9. TOHO Cinemas Ebina 630 seats - 6 showings (Max 3,780) 10. Kadokawa Cineplex Hiratsuka 254 seats - 4 showings (Max 1,016) 11. Keisei Rosa - 311 seats in one 241 seats in another - 5 showings in each (Max 27,60) 12. Total showings was 126 Max amount per day 43,061 For weekend - 86,122 Average ticket price was 1800 yen, max box office it could have brought in was 155,019,600 yen Total was ~100,000,000 yen, so average showing was 64.5% full. Edit: Average showing had 5664 people. Average theatre (out of 25 since Keisei Rosa showed it in two) had 227 people per showing. |

I just went to see it at #11, at the earliest 9:30 AM showing. Theater was about 1/3-1/2 full. |

However you look at it, just shows how strong the Haruhi brand is (or how blind the fans are)...
I mean not many other franchaises would have survived the disaster that was Haruhi season 2. |
