Not to nitpick, but Zenith of E? Isn't Z.O.T. the correct abreviation for the tournament?

Volume 11 came out recently, so I hope we'll be seeing that review soon too.

Just finished this last night. Still love reading Battle Angel. Is it as good as the first one, naw, not yet anyway. But those are some really big shoes to fill. Which still makes this one of the best manga out there.

Yeah big 'shock' at the end of 10 but it flows so well, and the art pulls you in. It's just hard to put down, even when things have been somewhat predictable as of late.

Read the first chapter of 11 last night as well. If I were to guess(and I am), it's that Kishiro is going to bring us full circle with all the different plots that have come up over the last 3 or 4 volumes. Like in a sick way(hopefully).

And what's up with such a long break in between releases. Geez, that's like the only bad thing about reading any good current manga.

Well, as I understand it the series comes out pretty slow in Japan too, since Ultra Jump is a monthly magazine. Volume 12 is the most recent one, hopefully we'll get it later this year.

Gunnm Gaiden would be nice too...

this guy can't review for his life... he called the Caerula arc "shaky" man that was epic, I'm sorry sir but your manga reviews lack seriousness.

Perhaps you should go back and read the review again before casting criticisms. The "shaky" reference was specifically about the artistry, not the storytelling, and is relative to the normal extremely high standard Kishiro has set. I personally own and have read (more than once) every volume of BAA and BAA:TLO that has been released in the States to date, and vol. 9 showed visual flaws more than any other one. (Although it was still good artistry by overall manga standards.)

It seems like the reviews and editorials in Anime News Network have been getting increasingly negative over the years. For instance, this line from this review stood out to me:

"Angel Goes Nova is not one of the series' better volumes, but it is still better than most of the other action-oriented trash out there in Mangaville."

It's a valid sentiment. Yukito Kishiro is a very good artist, and his action is certainly a cut above the rabble. But is it necessary to call most action manga trash? I'm not saying it's valid or invalid, but rather, comments like this are getting more and more common in reviews, and it's giving me the impression that the state of fandom is rather pessimistic right now.

I stress that that the writer has written a perfectly valid review. His sentiment that other action manga are "trash" is relevant to the review, and he's only drawing that comparison to make a point about the story he is reviewing.

I'm not saying everyone has to be happy go lucky and I'm not saying that being negative is automatically bad. I respect everyone who finds the time to contribute a coherent editorial to this website, but I do feel that the overall tone of Anime News Network is palpably more negative than it used to be, and I wonder why that is.

Why do so many writers have to point out how much they hate most anime/manga out there? Why do they feel the need to put down on thing in order to build up another? Why do they feel the need to reiterate that they have hobbies and interests outside of anime and manga?

I don't mean this as a complaint. I'm really curious.

I think you're way overstating the problem because, honestly, I don't think that the attitude around here has changed significantly in the 5+ years I've been following these forums and reading articles on this site. There's always at least a bit of negativity around because it's hard not to get a little cynical about the hobby at some point, but I think the positives still plenty outweigh the negatives. Look at the more glowing reviews that come out from time to time as an example of this.

And if the "reiterating that they have other hobbies" business is about the Spring Preview Guide entries, those are just standard bio blurbs. What's the point of making such a blurb if you're not going to get into what defines you besides just anime and manga? (And honestly, I'd be a bit worried about anyone who cannot define themselves beyond a single hobby, as that kind of obsession can be unhealthy.)

Thanks for the thorough response! I was a bit concerned that my post may come off as harping (and ironically over-negative itself). I think I am focusing too much on the negative, when it comes up, since well... I guess I'm looking out for it.

At the same time I do sometimes get the feeling that alot of writers seem to be overcompensating (I'm not referring to Theron Martin specifically btw I just happened to have this line of thought while reading through the other posts here) to appear to be well rounded people outside of the interest they are writing about. On a very primitive level, it's like some of the writers out there that feel the need to point out that they have a boyfriend/girlfriend even though they are into something kind of nerdy. But on a more subtle level, it's like people who have to point out that they enjoy Pixar more than most anime. It seems to belie an insecurity, as if there's a negative weight to liking anime or manga that has to be balanced out with other things.

I bring up the Pixar example because, well, for some reason whenever I meet someone new who likes anime they feel compelled to tell me they like Pixar as well so that I don't lump them in with the fanboys and girls. This happens alot! And i mean ALOT.

Its just strange to me that so many people are defensive about their interests. Perhaps it's just the particular social networks I'm in (I went to artschool) where people are more judgemental? Maybe that's bleeding into my overall worldview, like when I read ANN?

In any case, thanks for the thoughtful response! I still think ANN is a fantastic site. And the next time I think someone is being overly negative, I'll remember the positive things as well.

Cheers!
