The entire book is written in a direct-address style that recalls some of the clumsier translations of the brothers Grimm and gets dangerously close to being condescending in its simplicity. Whether it's a choice on Aoki's part or an artifact of the translation, rarely does his skill as a writer overpower its off-putting effects.

This is tangential, but as someone who presumably can’t read Japanese, how do you make the distinction between a bad translation and plain bad writing? Can you? Does it matter?

To actually talk about the book, everything in this review leaves me wanting to ignore this one except the believable teenager loser hero. That's usually such a bland and annoying sterotype I'd kinda like to see what this one has to offer. Is it worth it?
