Be what it may, I still found the Yotsuba Group arc more interesting than any of the plot after Mello and Near are introduced...
And come on, Not-Evil Light is a cutie.

Music's only a C+? Maan, that's probably one of the better parts of the anime. That and the animation kind of make up for all the cuts to the story the anime makes (compared to the manga).
And also, I really never thought the story went downhill in the second half (manga or anime). It kept an exciting pace and an amazing story from the moment it started until the very end, which, by the way, was very thrilling.
Just a great series all around, and one of the best I've ever read (or seen, really).

Unfortunately I have to agree with this assessment. I thought the series went downhill a bit starting with the Yotsuba arc and then dropped off a lot more after the death of L. I still think its incredible start merits including it amongst the best series of the current decade, but thanks to the second half of the series it won't be making my Top 5 list again this year.

The Yotsuba arc was a bit boring, but it sure does end in an exciting manner. Plus, looking back on it and realizing that it all went "Just as planned!" for Light makes it a bit more intriguing on subsequent viewings (still, watching it on Adult Swim, I found myself counting the episodes until it got to the conclusion).
Surprising that the music ended up with a C+ when it wasn't even mentioned at all in the review itself. I would personally rate it a bit higher, since tracks like "Low of Solipsism" (AKA that choral piece used to make mundane activities look exciting ) really stand out, though being in possession of all of the soundtracks, there certainly are a number of songs that kind of just drone on in the background without being very memorable. But I feel there are enough good tracks to make up for the ones that are not so spectacular. Then again, maybe the music on this particular volume was rated low because the better tracks aren't used in these episodes (I haven't seen these episodes it a while, so I can't really remember which music was used).

I can totally understand the low rating on music. The few themes that are used are like 5-second-loops and don't work on their own very well, and that's probably what good music should actually do.
On the other hand, I don't remember any specific music used towards the end of the series, so this judgement is completely based on the first 10 episodes or so.

I don't know that I'd entirely disagree that this is the weakest set of episodes in the series, but that's not saying much. I've been making my father, who's not an anime fan, watch Death Note with me as I've been getting the DVDs, and at the end of this one, he got a bit upset saying "That's IT? Don't you have the next DVD?!" Which is nothing but amuzing. I had a similar reaction the first time I saw the episodes on TV as well. If there's one thing Death Note never loses, it's the suspense. (Though I admit there were some episodes in the Near/Mello arc that were a bit lacking)
In fact, I think the show really loses something if you watch all the episodes back to back. Having to wait a while between installments is really all part of the fun.

I generally agree with the review; this is the weakest volume so far. The combination of comedic elements, and below-average plotting -- for the series -- broke a fair bit of the suspense that has been developed up until now. But the show is still great overall, and not having seen the manga/watched the anime anywhere else, I'm not about to stop watching.
I'll second Casey's comments about the OPs, and the EPs, for that matter. I think they're a lot of fun to watch. Especially the set for the second half of the series, which have some pretty cool imagery.

I thoroughly enjoyed episode 19- "Matsuda". I just like how the "plan came together".
As someone else mentioned earlier, the end of the Yotsuba arc is very exciting. I think it is the most riveting set of sequences in the whole series. Unfortunately, it's another volume or two away.

This set was ok but I always like it when things go light's way. Oh but It did get a lot less interesting when L dies and his wannabe heirs take over Oh and I do like the music especially light's theme and the op and ed but what's up people and zetsubou billy take some getting used to but when I did I thought they were great.

These episodes are the ones that tends to depress me. After L's death, the show kind of goes downhill. Not meaning that it sucks however, it still rocks.
[EDIT: Way to ruin the series. Not for me, but maybe for others. Please try to use spoiler tags when necessary, next time. Thanks -TK]

You probably should have but that in spoilers ryuzaki. Some people might not have watched the adult swim run and didn't know.

Why wait ot watch the show on DVD anyways ??? You can watch the english broadcast several places online. tune into the Japanese version, or read the manga. Like it or not, there are far to many places online that have spoilers for the show.
