I’m not the biggest Donkey Kong fan, but this looks really good.

I hope it does everything DK64 did and better. Definitely looking forward to playing that, and Metriod Prime using a mouse.

My first impression isn't so hot - I'll be shocked if it pops up later that I'm wrong Rare did participate in development, but this looked more like a Mario Galaxy/Odyssey game and seemed to be using some of those more recent design ideas. Just... the Rare sense of style and characterisation is missing, and the art direction is waaaaay too cotton-candy for me. It's possible my opinion will change after trying it myself, but for now I'm fine just playing older stuff.

I'm happy to see a new 3D Donkey Kong, but seeing his new design in action...I'm not wild about it. I hope the game is fun but, I'll probably be waiting for a sale and/or price drop because $70 is a bit high based on what they showed

On the Nintendo Today app they showed off the camera rotating a pause still of him after smashing showing off the games particle effects. It's... Amazing.

I am the exact opposite, I love this newer cartoonier design, dont hate the rare one, but I love this take too. I love cartoony artstyles.

So Donkey Kong by way of Mario Odyssey.
DK's new design will take some getting used to.

Yeah we don’t need 5 playable characters, jankily designed minigames, and multiple types of currency.

What characterization?
The only characters that had any characterization were supporting cast like Cranky, Funky, and the Bears from 3

It can be something as simple as Sonic being left to stand still and he starts tapping his foot and checking a wristwatch - it's in the art direction, the aesthetic, the tone & presentation of how the characters are interacting with each other....
The SNES Donkey Kong Country (and to a lesser extent DK64) games had a bit of a "darker" tone and there was good bit of "industrialisation vs nature" that you could see as you would travel around the games. In the switch to the DK Returns series, it kept enough of the older designs and aesthetic choices (use of color, barrels, gameplay elements) that it didn't seem too far from the original Country series....
But Bananza seems like they took Movie DK and dropped him into Mario Odyssey. Some people are going to find that to be cool, it's not for me. It's not something I'd really thought about until recently but Rare and its style was apparently something I really cherished about those games, and removing it feels like a part of DK's soul was removed.

To be fair people probably thought the same thing when DKC dropped in 94. And later still when the post Rare games dropped.

To me DK's design doesn't look "new" so much as an intentional throwback to the original cabinet art. Heck, he looks more than a little like Donkey Kong Jr. from Super Mario Kart.

I was absolutely going INSANE that no one else saw that. I loved the new design it looks VERY old school.
