I'm so glad the movie is going to be streaming and dubbed! I mean, CAITLIN GLASS AS LADY OSCAR!
I wonder if they'll dub the songs too. |

Well it’s disappointing this will likely not get a physical release, but I am glad it is coming out so soon after release in Japan. I assume an English version has been part of the plan from the beginning since the movie’s Youtube page provided English subtitles for every video.

Here's hoping that if Anime Limited gets Blu-ray rights in 5-6 years that Netflix doesn't screw them from getting the dub again.

I really hope this leads to a dub for the old show, after all, the OTHER big Michi Himeno anime got a redub once Netflix did their own take on it (Saint Seiya) and TMS desperately wants to hit it big outside Japan like every other studio.

As much as I'd love that, it won't happen. Old shows are considered too old to invest money into dubbing, and since Discotek has the license to the 70s series, they can't afford to dub it either as they don't have the resources of companies like CR and GKids. |

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with FireChick. I remember Netflix had several anime titles that didn't have any English dub at all, and they still performed fine. Even if they did dub it in English, the voice would stick out like a sore thumb given it's a brand new voice. I'm still waiting to see if Discotek will allow the old anime to be streamed on Netflix to help cross-promote which would really help the old anime a lot.
I'm probably going to do the same, just hope the French voice is just as good as the English and Japanese. |

I hate to rain on everyone's parade here,but while it's great that "The Rose of Versailles" film is getting an English dub that it deserves,the series itself didn't get one. Yes,they said it's too old to get one,but recent news has said otherwise. Shows like "Lupin the Third,"the "Dirty Pair" TV series,and "Gunbuster" all got English dubs recently and I have no problem with that.
If this film looks to be a big hit here,there might be a demand to dub the series. Personally,I think it would be long overdue,and I hope it happens. It deserves it. Yes,there might be licensing issues,but hopefully,those might be smoothed out. I think that "The Rose of Versailles" TV series does deserve an English dub no matter how old it is. I think so,but what do you guys think? |

Not every anime are able to get English dub or even a full one, I mean even Fist of the North Star on SD-BD, only 36 episodes (out of 152 episodes) had English dub, and they never continue to dub the whole thing, I can say the same for Saint Tails, only 15 episodes (out of 43 episodes) received English dub. I don't have to remind you about Space Adventure Cobra (the TV series, not the film) where they only made an experimental English dub for the 1st 2 episodes, then after that, the rest of the anime is to be watched with subtitle (no other episodes receive any dub, just episode 1 and 2). I mean you have to lived with the reality that not every anime will get English dub, but now since every people in North America/US are watching stuff with closed caption and subtitles turned on, I think that people have already become used to watching stuff with subtitles on, they're probably more likely to watch anime with subtitles on meaning they'll watch anime with Japanese voice with subtitles on even if the English dub is available or don't have English dub at all. In other word, companies that handle licensing, and localizing anime for the US/North American market will likely leaned heavily toward subtitles over dubbing more and more for cost effective purpose since they are already aware of this trend and that can lead to more anime or prioritize which anime get subtitle with no English dub release a la Sentai Filmworks titles, & Discotek titles. I mean even GKIDS have release anime titles with no English dub like Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko (that anime film title had no English dub at all when GKIDS release it in the US). Anime companies in the US have already been aware of people watching subtitles more over English dub because folks in the US have already been watching films, both English-language speaking films/TV shows, or foreign language stuff with subtitles/closed caption on, so that can lead to more non-mainstream anime TV series, and probably some films to not get an English dub depend on how well-known or not well-known/obscure that title. |

Me too. Out of all the old stuff, I still thinks the RoV TV series has enough clout behind it to make an English dub profitable. It is not going to make big money, but make some money. It is also relatively entry-level anime. As long as you know a bit of French Revolution, then you should be able to watch the show even with its almost 50 year old animation style. I know companies like to chase after the hotcakes, so I don't have high hopes, but still. Even if we never get an English dub, at least there is the French dub for the TV series. |

As I said, the chances of the old TV shows getting an English dub is very slim, it would be a miracle if this anime get an English dub, but I highly doubt it. Even if it get a new English dub, the English voice would stick out like a sore thumb. And I say this as someone who watches anime in English voice myself. But for older (as in 70's, 80's, or 90's) anime with a new English dub, a new voice and a way older animation makes it feel out of place for some reason, I mean if you watch an old anime with the original Japanese voice, and watch the same old anime with a brand-new English dub, it would feel odd and kind of feel out of place when I watch it in English, that's why I would watch older anime from the 70's, and 80's in their original Japanese voice over a brand-new English dub even if the brand new dub is included. Also, as I said above, more people are watching their entertainment with subtitle/closed captioning on. So when people are used to watching all their entertainment with subtitle/closed caption on, they're more likely to watch anime with English subtitle on even if the anime has an English dub (or can watch anime with subtitle even if it doesn't have an English dub included). So any anime that doesn't have a dub, but a subtitle, that makes those anime titles that don't have English dub a bit easier to watch for those people that are used to watching non-anime stuff with subtitle/closed caption on. |

To be fair I am the exact opposite, I cant stand audio that's too dated, that's why I am the only one who loves the new Snow White dub made in mexico way more recently than any other. Rose Of Versailles has high quality audio in Japanese but I bet people would love a dub especially if its one made with the perks of modern day dubbing. |

Well, that's your preferences. I would prefer if anime if it has 2 English dub (or in the case of Lupin the 3rd: Mystery of Mamo, 4 different English dubs were made and Discotek was nice enough to include all of them for their BD and DVD releases), I would liked to have those 2 English dub included in case some people think the new dub stands out like a sore thumbs. That's why I appreciate Funimation for including Akira with the 2 English dubs for the BDs & DVDs, and the same can be said for Escaflowne TV & movie. |
