Not a yokai, but in ep 1 Okarun namedrops Jim Channon of "First Earth Battalion" fame. Channon wanted to make an army of psychic "warrior monk" supersoldiers dedicated to world peace. It's perfect 1970's hippie mystic woowoo. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Earth_Battalion

Yes! Pretty much every reference in DanDaDan is pulled from some obscure source. It was so much fun exploring these. I could have easily doubled the length of the article. Maybe they'll ask me back for a sequel!

Please do, powers that be! Incidentally, thanks for helping my Halloween season be bright! I've been reading my spooky manga this month like usual, and it's always a treat to read the Mizuki stuff. Can't have a spooky season without a bit of yokai fun. I'm looking forward to my copy of your new Yokai art book finally escaping the mail distribution center, too. |

Actually, there is. Just say "pomade" three times and run like hell. Either that or pull a Popuko and let social media decide. |

The "pomade" answer comes from much later, from 1979 when a disco song by the band Pomade and Kompeito had a hit with their song Kuchisake onna o Tsukamaeru. These are the wonderful things you can learn from my book! |

Serpos's actual design is pretty obviously also at least partially inspired by Dada (the body) and Alien Pegassa (the head) from the Ultraman series. As mentioned in ANN's interview with the anime's director, the manga's author is a big Ultraman fan.

Indeed! It would be amazing to get more from this series, especially since a lot of this stuff is super obscure to us Western viewers/internet denizens. |
