No wonder so many panels were at capacity before opening.

First Otakon I've ever attended, and Friday wasn't so bad, but person-density felt pretty crazy to me on Saturday. Spent half the time just looking for a space to escape the crowds!

Wow, it's really rocketed up in size over the past three years, well beyond even pre-COVID numbers. At one point in the early 2010s it was the second-biggest U.S. anime con (after only AX), but it lost that title due to an attendance dip in the mid-2010s. Now it might have reclaimed it. Anime Central also felt like it had its biggest attendance this year, but it was probably a few thousand short of this level.

Gen Con, the U.S.'s biggest gaming convention, just concluded and it also hit record attendance numbers this year (over 71k). So it's been a good summer season for the big geek-focused cons.

I stopped going once it hit 12'000, an I have no regret. Even with 12'000 it was maddening.

The one year that I decided not to go and take a break from conventions.

Judging by this capacity (and the schedules) I made the right call.

I haven't been to Otakon since 2016, the move to DC killed it for me. My son and his fiancee went in 2023, and they enjoyed it. From my discussion with him, 2024 was a mixed bag they had fun but too crowded. Keep in mind we used to do AX and Otakon for numerous years, this was my first year not doing anime cons since the early 00s.
