I'm very surprised this hasn't happened more often since it's been a growing problem for the last couple of years. Basically, those "internet refugees" are just one step higher than being homeless and people can become desperate sometimes.
Hopefully this doesn't happen again, but if it does, I wouldn't be surprised... |

I wonder what its like to live in a cafe....I bet it'd be fun if I could find a job and live there. Do they have beds or do you just rest on the chairs?
It's such an intresting thought....it'd be a lot better than sleeping outside on the ground. |

I think the thinking of this person was if he get caught,at least he wouldn't have to worried about not having a place to stay. Living in jail is at least free.

I would think living in jail is worse than living in a manga cafe because of you know, being with the imprisoned criminals.
Wasn't it mentioned here that those cafes have showers? And they probably have lots of cushy chairs to sleep in. But it sounds like this guy wasn't happy being in this type of comfort. I think he was unhappy at not having a place of his own. I wonder if this means the Japanese government needs to think about trying to make affordable housing for people. |

Internet sarcasm can be hard to pull off. Not to mention that your sarcastic line of thinking might very well be a logical one for an unemployed person living in a manga cafe. |

You may not have been series but people do get them selves arrested on purpose. Homeless people do it all the time, especial during the summer and winter. You just take a swing at a cop then they send you to the lock up where you get a roof over your head and a free meal. Being in jail is way better then dieing of heat stroke in the summer or freezing to death in the winter.

Yupe that's how it is but sometimes cops will let you go because they know that the person wants to go to jail. |

I had the similar suspicion long time ago. Allow me to quote myself:

This seems to be fairly common in Japan. No guns you know. |

I took it seriously but due to my field of study I've seen countless cases where this was the truth. Often people will do that for those reasons. Many immigrant women will also get arrested because by our law if they're pregnant we have to help them. Free healthcare thanks to our taxes. Honestly if you are destitute and have literally nothing at all then jail may not be as bad as you think. They'd do some minor thing and get put in the minimal security ward with the less violent offenders and get free food, free health care, and a roof over their head. When you're living ina box on the corner those thoughts can be tempting. Though I would prefer to live in a maid cafe' if given the choice lol. Cuter uniforms heh. |

Overall, the combination of the fact that he robbed a place he often stayed, demanded 1 million yen, used a razor blade as a weapon (although that might be explainable), and later said "I've begun to hate this lifestyle." seems to indicate it was at least a irrational and poorly thought out crime of desperation, if not an actual attempt to get arrested.
