after all the drama that went down in 2005, i'm surprised anyone still wants to do this. there's no way Anime Expo wants to be involved with these people again.

What's the story behind the US not being involved any more? The US has plenty of cons, so if something odd happened at Anime Expo, they should probably just go over to Otakon instead or something.
Good that Australia has it, too, now. I'm all for the world coming together with a common interest in cosplay, despite how much this contest reeks of corruption. |

it's a really long story. suffice to say the US got screwed over really bad in the 2005 wcs. the Rose of Versailles team got disqualified supposedly, because the mangakai doesn't like people cosplaying her stuff. then there were lots of reports about how the finalists, particularu us team were treated like crap in japan. just look up 2005 world cosplay summit for more information.
also interesting to note that the runner up for the 2006 summit was a Rose of Versailles cosplay group . |

Yeah we had some real good Cosplayers in Animania this year, but every year i go they just keep getting better, Last yeat we had a guy dressed in full metal outfit from Full metal Alchemist, must of been freaky heavey.

If I'm not mistaken wasn't an italian team also disqualified for cosplaying Rose of Versailles as well? But didn't a japanese team also get a runner up award this year for RoV as well?
If anybody's willing to look for the thread on cosplay.com, there's a whole dicussion and explanation about what happened during the '05 World Cosplay Summit (both the North American qualification part at AX and what happened during the finals in japan.) , which includes cosplayers and people from AX who were actually involved in the whole deal. From what I understand the competition seems to be looked at by many as judging more based on looks than craftsmanship. So it ends up being more like a modeling/who would look best on tv competition than anything else. |

Don't forget the Italian team allegedly had connections with the producers of WCS or someone related to another faction/business where they won. |

Sounds shady. :\
I was wondering if WCS kicked the US out for some reason, but it sounds as if the US left on its own will after being badly offended. My respect for Rose of Versailles has just plummeted... |

It's 2007 (2008 come the next WCS).
Let's stop living in the past and try to regain our foothold in the WCS. I'm tired of not seeing anyone represent this country in a world competition. Actually, that might be not far... |

I think there is so much difference between what we consider "cosplay" and what Japan considers "cosplay" that this overture should be summarily turned down before the next US champs get disqualified for not being swimsuit models who bend over and bare their butts for the camera or somesuch...
