I cant fathom how the art and animation in this received an A- and a B. From the start, the show looked beyond horrid and absolutely slaughtered the original character designs by okama...

You may have too negative a view on the anime artwork because you're comparing it to the source material. The review isn't. Based solely on its own merits, this series has loads of great-looking artistry in it; only the rougher drawings of the commoners kept me from giving it a full "A" grade.

And if you think this series truly looks "beyond horrid," I can show you well-regarded anime that looks fantastically worse.

All I remember from the animation was jerky motion, poor detail, and overall quality that was reminicent of, if not worse than Speed Grapher.

As much as I'd like to forget this show, I remember that much clearly.

Then again I suppose I do have a certain bias, as I'm quite fond of Okama's designs, and what this show did to them is horrible.

The significant flaw here actually lays in the subtitles, which regularly misspell Vetti's surname as “Sfolza” when it clearly should be “Sforza,” a reference to a noble family which heavily influenced Italian politics during the 15th and 16th centuries.
So by "regularly misspelled," do you mean that it's sometimes spelled "Sfolza," and other times spelled "Sforza"? A little common sense about Italian names would've gone a long way, regardless of the history involved. If it's going to be wrong, it's at least better to be consistently wrong Rolling Eyes

I don't know, Glass Fleet seems like it leans more to the Trinity Blood / Speed Grapher side of the Gonzo spectrum, rather than the Last Exile / Gankutsuou side. I never checked it out in fansubs because the chatter on it wasn't good, and this review seems to give the same opinion. Maybe I'll pick up the boxed set in the future to indulge my off-and-on Gonzo appreciation, but I think I'll continue giving it a pass for now.

I don't know what source material you refer to, but I'd been anticipating this series mainly because of the awesome artwork on the official page... and I was greatly disappointed seeing that the designs may be good, but the animation is indeed beyond horrid. It's like Weiss Kreuz with more CG. To call the animation stiff is an understatement, the 3D and 2D objects don't blend (and it doesn't seem like an artistic choice like in the case of Gankutsuou), characters' faces fall apart every so often, and... really, it's a mess.

This series (at least the ten or so episodes I've managed to watch) was very, very disappointing. I don't know what they wanted to achieve with this show, but I think the creators themselves didn't know it either. It's too bawdy and stupid for a space opera, but too serious for a fun adventure romp in space. The characters are stereotypes on legs, the fanservice (? is it? or what is it?) is stupid, the comic relief sucks beyond belief ("the little guy's glasses were knocked down again, HA HA HA" - really, there's more fun to be had in scenes that are unintentionally comic), the "glass" ship provides the only remotely interesting fight scenes, and the writers apparently have no sense for timing, so drama, action, fanservice and humor form a huge, disjointed mess.

Really, the only good things about this show are the music and the designs. They deserved a better show.

I just remember Funimation announcing it...to basically a full room of blank stares. That show *totally* came in under the radar. And a subtitle in French damn near screams the kind of pretentious it takes a *lot* to carry off well. Even from just the OP, it doesn't look like they succeeded.

Yes, they do consistently misspell it "Sfolza" (and that's what it sounds like the seiyuu are saying) in the subtitles, although it is is pronounced clearly as "Sforza" by the English VAs. Granted, it's not an earth-shaking mistake, but there's also no excuse for it since anyone who's even casually studied European Renaissance-era history should recognize that reference.

I can see why people would be down on this one; upon reflection, the B overall grades may be a little on the nice side. Its design is too pretty and its soundtrack too good for it to qualify among "the worst anime ever made," however, and it does get a little better later in the first volume. If the second volume doesn't bring things together better, though, then I probably won't follow it after that.

And BTW, this one is due out on 10/16, so consider this an advance preview.

Wow, this is very interesting.
I read a bunch of reviews for this while it it was being fansubbed, and I did not find a single positive one. All of them basically said what people are saying here, that the artwork and animation was the definition of horrible.
I myself, didn't actually find it to be so. I found the quality of the art to be about average, nothing all too special but nothing to whine about.

I have seen the entire series during its fansub run, and it is really quite good! I will defonatly be buying this. Im glad to see a review giving it the credit it deserves. Yes, there are some problems with the writing, and the artwork is nothing to write home about, but its still a great series.

Well I was pretty excited about this coming out, for real. The plot sounds interesting to me and it seems to me that there is a lot to work with. In fact it was on my must buy list, however this review has made me do a double take. I might have to focus my efforts more on other series. Shame really, since this type of story line appeals to me. Hopefully it will start shaping up in later volumes, it is not like there aren't other series that start out bad and then turn out great. I still might end up getting this, but this threw a big Question in my decision. I guess I just didn't expect it to be so scatterbrained.

Oh well, I was hoping for a diamond in the rough type review(the type thats like "why aren't more people talking about this"), but that's what I get for getting my hopes up.

I second Glass Fleet being that it has the same quirks as Last Exile. Although, I prefer Last Exile than Glass Fleet in an anime appreciation.
I do also agree that Gonzo has shown quite of similarities in some of the animes they made. Please don't say 'Yah. They all are rubbish' or 'Suck!' because that is just unfair.
I mean, the similarities are those of their method of interpreting the story, and the expressing it animation.
