Since the old thread is, well, old, I'll just ask it here:
Why was the Winny developer arrested (it's a side note)? Didn't he only wrote the program? That'd be like arresting the bittorrent developer because the program is being used illegally. 1-Year prison term for a low-level copyrights crime? A little harsh in my opinion, but I guess they want to make an example just to prevent the repeat. |

IIRC, because the Winny creator actually admitted stupidly that violating copyrights is one of his intentions for the program. He openly does not believe in copyrights and wants to share everything to the world (the moral debate of it we'll leave for another day). OTOH, the BT creator openly does not condone illegal uses of his creation and wisely doesn't give the feds/MPAA/RIAA/etc any excuse that could charge him (like, say, him ever using BT to illegally download copyrighted works) and thus go after his creation. |
