Yeah right, I think we all know how "good" and "transcendent" the anime actually was...

I don't understand the hate the show receives. I enjoyed it, seemed pretty good to me.

Is this just a Japanese thing where you're not allowed to criticize things, or am I going to have to lower my estimation of Junji Ito?

This is heartwarming.
It's always great to see creators happy and excited about adaptations of their work.
I agree with him about live action adaptations of manga. Even if they're good, there's something special about having that 2D aesthetic, and I think that's the strength of anime adaptations. I'm glad he enjoyed his anime.

He's hardly going to slag it off at its own promo event. Although he might be doing a Steven King & prefers adaptations that are more faithful to his original work than those that are good in their own right - not that any of them have been.

It's the japanese thing, however there are thankfully some artists who still can be negative not only about adaptations of their works, but also about completely different works which are popular, like One Piece (was it Golden Boy's author who criticized it?).

It's almost a 1 for 1 adaptation, but animation quality wise, it needed help, a lot of help, maybe the blu-ray release will have Studio DEEN fixing a lot.

Surprised to hear that he feels so positively towards it. But then, he’s a very humble guy, and artists always have their own very specific vantage point and often don’t hold their works up as holy gospel like their fans often do. Plus it’s not like the competition the anime had previously was all that impressive. I thought the series was fine overall, but it definitely felt like a “bargain store” version of Ito. Underwhelmingly, the animation and sound design, what there was of it, didn’t really add much to the stories. I’d say it took away from them more often than not. But as a huge Ito fan, I can’t say I was insulted by it or anything. I could at least tell the people behind it were *trying* to make a respectable adaption.
Also, it’s humorous that his favorite sections were the Souchi ones, given how it’s the exact opposite with most fans who seemed to really dislike those ones.

Imagine being so pompous that you think people having a different opinion of something means that they’re lying/being dishonest.

You'd have to be pompous to put thoughts in the author's head, to genuinely think that'd he lie about liking an adaptation for money or something, I'm quite sure if he hated it, he would have said so!
