Though, for some perspective, I do remember seeing the partial Nielsen Videoscan numbers back when such information was a little easier to find on the Internet, and, the week when Spirited Away was second, in terms of actual volume, it still only sold 12% of the number of DVDs that the top-selling DVD of the week, Die Another Day, sold that particular week.

Also, I'm guessing they're not counting the edited kiddy TV dub merchandise franchise anime theatrical films, because, while I have no idea whether it would beat Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, or The Animatrix in terms of overall all-time sales, I think it's probably a reasonably safe bet that the Pokémon: The First Movie DVD would at least place in the second half of the top ten.

Most of Pokemon the first movie's sales were on VHS I think.

How can we find out HOW MANY DVDs were sold? It's great to know these titles are selling but how many are they selling is what I want to know.

Damn how I wish Fighting Spirit/Hajime no Ippo was on that best-seller list.
Oh well, I can dream can't I?

The estimates I saw for Spirited Away were in the 600.000-800,000 range, but that was only in 2003. If it still ranks on the anime charts (though, certainly, over the past couple of weeks, the Miyazaki films would have gotten a boost from the TCM airings, and YTV airing Mononoke), I'd say there's a reasonably good chance it's crossed the million mark, but probably just by a hair.

You can't really.
Nielson doesn't like when people publish the numbers.
And the nielson numbers are just for comparisson sake, they're a poll of a certain segment of the market.
Which is why we put the last two as a tie, because they were close enough to each other that it wasn't certain which really was first.
The only way to get exact numbers is for the studio to release them, and that rarely happens.

I remember back in the day that on some weeks, DBZ videos would place within the top 10 total sales of the week according to Nielsen.
I don't remember the last time I saw any anime in the top 10 though.
