The series does pick up later on. Meanwhile, we're going to deal with the quirkyness and episodic stuff until after the 2nd DVD.
But like any good series, you have to stick it out.

Wow, talk about nostalgia central. I completely forgot all about the original Shadow Skill until I spotted this review. I was quite fond of the 1995 OVA, and I remember the final fighting sequence having some of the nicest animation I've ever seen. Maybe I'll give this one a try for old time's sake. If I hate it, at least I'll have more incentive to get my hands on the original and watch that one again.
Thanks for the review, Key!

The first time I watched Shadow Skill, I couldn't figure out why my friend thought it was so awesome. After watching it up to around 3/4 of the way through the series, this became my second favorite martial arts series (Hunter X Hunter first). The growth of Gao is extremely well done, focusing on real character development rather than special attacks. The fighting is hardcore, short, and interesting. Characters learn from their battles.
The series isn't filled with cheesy lines and bad dialogue.
Also notable is the soundtrack. The opening music gets your blood racing like no other, the background music is extremely well done, and the ending is also catchy.

I thought the first OVA was good, if only for the really awesome fight at the end. It's enough to justify picking up the DVD. The three episode one was, uh...not so great. It seemed like they used most of their budget in the first fifteen minutes and then things went downhill from there. Still, it got me interested in the TV show and manga, so I suppose it made for a good stepping stone if anything.
I guess there still aren't any plans to publish the manga yet? After three animated versions (and that weird looking CG one from last year, but that isn't here yet), I hope we get to see the original story at some point.

Though the animation quality is very spastic, the music was pretty good. Especially "Born Legend" (the TV series OP)... it's just a cool song with all of it's rhythms and tribal beats.
But yeah, to anyone reading this. I do recommend you give this series a rental at least, once the 2nd half of the series rolls around , it's pretty damn intense. I just wish the story was finished or the manga is released here.

I completely agree with you there. Everything about that fight is absolutely perfect: the animation, the action, the music...
Drats, I'm going to have to get my hands on that so I can watch it again.
