Oh my goodness! Now here's something you wouldn't have expected!

Well, it's a vast world. It's a wonder no one had thought about it long ago.

I just don't see how Appleseed has enough of a concept to support an MMORPG. I've seen so many MMORPG titles fall apart either during beta or shortly after release. Sony thought The Matrix Online was going to be good idea, and now they are merging all of their servers into about 3 because they were too sparsely populated.

Granted, Asians love MMORPGs, so maybe there will be an audience, but I won't be surprised if it doesn't materialize.

Actually I see lots of possibilities. Players can be Human, Biodroid, or Cybernetic. They can be Politicians, Military, or Freedom Fighter. They can have access to Olympus or be left in the wilds. Story lines could be as subtle as moving up in the local chain of command to infiltrating Olympus to scouting and recognizance of "power cells" in the wilds to eliminating prime figures. Depending on the time frame they place the game in players could even find themselves hunting or protecting some obscure component of Appleseed itself.

Sega's already coming out with an action game based on the movie.

Well, a stand alone game would be appropriate, I think. But, the problem with an MMORPG is how well does it serve its niche? Is it just some game thrown together to try and capitalize on a already proven concept? There is a reason that sequels often suck, and that reason transfers to game tie-ins, as well: people already thought the story was told sufficiently.

With an Appleseed MMORPG you have a niche within a niche within a niche. You have a movie tie-in MMORPG game that will attract a fraction of people who viewed the anime film (or manga). There can't possibly be enough of an audience there to sustain this game for over a year.

Heck, I just read that Asheron's Call 2 is being shut down in December. That game had some background (in AC1), and a cult of loyal players. Unfortunately, I think it fell to the curse of the sequel. Unless you can make the sequel as good or better than the original, it just isn't worth making.
