Awesome that GuP has beaten PMMM at the box office! Smile If luck prevails, it may have a chance at surpassing Love Live.

4DX , ULTIRA, and I assume some minor ticket inflation could be major factors in this. I'd have to see actual sales numbers for Madoka to be really surprised. I just know 4DX and ULTIRA are pretty expensive. I always hate how they compare $$ made from movies without taking into account how much tickets cost. Like when they compare Harry Potter vs recent movies....tickets where I live were like 6 dollars cheaper when the first Harry Potter movie came out lol.

As big of a fan as I am of the Madoka Magica franchise, I considered the 3rd movie to be a complete disaster and incoherent to the movie's first season predecessor. I would even go so far as to say that I do not consider the 3rd movie to be a part of the original series because the events of the movie nearly ruined the whole series for me.

The Girls und Panzer der Film, however, delivered in every possible way, creating suspense and amazing action sequences of high school girls in tanks (and college girls, for that matter). The 3rd Madoka movie pales in comparison to the Girls Und Panzer movie and rightly so, due to its incoherent storytelling and characters that behaved in ways that were not coherent to their characters in the episode series.

Looking forward to see just how many discs are sold for the movie. Should find out tomorrow morning. Congratulations to the all those involved with GuP in creating a bonafide mega-hit franchise out of practically nothing.

I would argue that the characters acted entirely in-character in Rebellion, and many multiple paragraphs of why it was a brilliant treastise on what would happen if someone as calculating yet emotional (but repressed... oh so repressed) went through the looking glass and went COMPLETELY spoilers.

But this thread is about GuP, is it not? And many megareams of argument have been thrown in both directions re: Rebellion, which if nothing else is proof that the story and characters had a lasting impression on their audience.

I like GuP but I can't say that the characters had a lasting impression on me. I loved the series but it wasn't as character-driven as it was action-driven.

Also, did they get a different VA for Mako? She sounds... different.

So am I.
I really hope that it sells well.
I fell in love with this franchise and I have all of the anime and manga that has been released in the US so far. I am even thinking seriously about getting some tank models, even though I have not built a model since I was a child.
The movie has performed incredibly well. If the discs also sell well then I feel confident that we will get more of the show, in some form.

I second that.
It seems that Girls und Panzer is an original anime, not an adaptation of anything.
The people who made it have some impressive credentials, but they did make it out of practically nothing.
And they did a great job with it.

GuP is a great achiement. Its creative in its use of Japanese pop culture mixed with historical tank battles and is one of the finest anime series in recent years. I would say that the movie is superior to the Madoka film or the Love Live film (although I am not a big fan of love live overall) and certainly deserves to one of the top late night anime films of all time.

It isn't part of the original series. Movie canon is a 'retelling' separate from tv canon, according to the powers that be. Just as the manga is sort of its own universe, so are the movies.

So feel free to ignore it. I'm the same. Acknowledging the film would ruin a series that is near and dear to me, as the tv anime's ending was a huge part of why it was. It's not even about characterization, it's about presentation and the messages the movie sends and negates. 5,000 essays on how it was 'totally in character' can't change that it absolutely does tarnish the original ending.

So yeah I admit it makes me just a wee bit happy whenever something surpasses Rebellion. Go GuP.

That's why "adjusted to current dollar".

And, # of sales is also announced for garupan although I am not sure about if that is the case for PMMM's last announcement too. But a large part of these high-gross midnight anime movie's box office are come from fans rewatching it for dozens time so the meaning of # of ticket sold isn't really that large here.

That's some opinion that PMMM's creator would expect for the movie.

The tickets for 4DX and ULTIRA are much more expensive. You can just see here that the average ticket price is now 1,690 yen and when the 4DX screenings started, the weekly average ticket price has gone up from 1,400~1,500 yen up to 1,900~2,200 yen. I am a big fan of GaruPan, but even I know that its gross earnings are heavily inflated due to the 4DX and ULTIRA screenings. Just imagine if Love Live!, Madoka or K-ON! had 4DX screenings?

I have to agree, that it has a slim chance of doing so unless it is there for another 10~15 weekends. After the film strip boost on May 21, and the addition of more screens for 4DX and ULTIRA, gross earnings is already started to settle down again. Theater runs can only be inflated so many times.

Take a look at the graph below, for how long it took GaruPan to go from ~1.1 bn yen to 1.9 bn yen, and consider that the BD is already out. Do you still think it has a good chance, considering gross earning are starting to settle down? I would be happy if GaruPan somehow manages to beat Love Live, despite being a big fan of both franchises, but realistically it'd have to hand out film strips for multiple more weekends for that to happen.

Attendance numbers for week 29, Monday is 71.5% of last Monday, Tuesday is 101.6% of last Tuesday due to being the first day of the month (so tickets are discounted), Wednesday is 40.4% of last Wednesday.

@Ejc

I have two questions:

What are you trying to show with all of that?

What are the movies on the chart?
I cannot read the titles.
